Yeah its normally 256kbps variable Ogg (or similar Mp3 bitrate) for me.
I'm not really bothered about the extra HDD space they take up and I can still fit plenty enough albums at that bitrate on the 1`gig card in my palm (which is the only mobile mp3/ogg player I have) .
256K ogg here too

Since I have no portable devices to support, 256 or 320Kbps MP3. Haven't tried OGG yet, but then, it's been a while since I've done any ripping.
Howard, you should look into FLAC. It's a lossless codec (The output will be identical to the original wave), and it's quite a bit smaller than good old WAV files. It can be found at http://flac.sourceforge.net/
None of my devices support FLAC. Well, the Squeezebox does, but it then encodes it back to MP3 on the fly I think, so it makes the whole exercise a bit futile. Since we have a lot of HDD space to play with (60GB on my MP3 and 120GB on the server), we don't mind using 320K Mp3s and WAV files, etc
