AppleTV vs FireTV vs FireStick vs Chromecast etc
What would work best? Do they offer a means of recording freeview or would we still need a humax or similar for that (to watch programmes at a more convenient time)?
PCs and android stuff no real apple ecosystem in the flat.
Depends on what you want to watch. Cheap bluray players can do stuff like Netflix these days, which is what we tend to use. But then the old PS3 can stream a few services too, but takes longer to boot up.
For a TV up on a wall, the Chromecast works very nicely.
We just watch freeview and will probably sign up to amazon prime. Not too fussed about netflix atm but may want that in the future. iplayer a must, but pretty much anything does that these days.
The ideal would be a freeview play recorder box that also does amazon prime but don't think that exists so far as I can tell. FireTV doesn't do freeview play and I haven't found an FVP box that does amazon prime (that they advertise anyway).
Well I wouldn't spend too much on set-top boxes. Our couple of years old LG Smart TV can record Freeview (and satellite) if you plug a decent sized USB drive in the back, does Amazon, Netflix, NowTv and a bunch of other stuff and all off one remote. Really like my FTV boxes and does all i want it to do. We have Freeview via the tv but you can get terrestrial channels through the FTV via an app if you need to. I've also side loaded Kodi to all of the FTV boxes so I can access all my video on the home server, it really works well.
I have a humax box for recording and a chromecast for streaming, The chromecast is ok it works with plex too but not kodi.
