What does it matter now if men believe or no?
What is to come will come. And soon you too will stand aside,
To murmur in pity that my words were true
(Cassandra, in Agamemnon by Aeschylus)
To see the wizard one must look behind the curtain ....
Funny thing is that I am mainly a headphone user even when I had a 7.1 setup, but after moving, and not taking the speakers with me, I considered getting a soundbar for the perceived simplicity. In the end though, I opted for a beanbag with built in speakers. It was what it was, not a substitute for headphones for music listening, but it worked well enough for movies and games and allowed my head to be free. With the speakers being so close to the head, it had the added benefit of not being annoying for my flatmates despite the fair thin walls in an old building (very noticeable when the upstairs couple decided to be indiscrete ).
That's fine and all assuming you're watching it on your own. I have a wife and 3 kids, so headphones aren't really an option.
It's depends what's space you have it for, Sound bars is better to have.
Finally got around to a pic:
My current plan is to possibly replace the 3 speakers with Q ACOUSTICS
3090Cs at the extreme left and right and centre of the unit, and rest the TV (probably a 55" OLED) on top of them. This would put the base of the new TV around 5cm above the current centre speaker.
Long term Mrs b0redom is talking about moving/scrapping the units and having a built in set of shelves filling the entire alcove, but that's some way away.
To me that space screams out for wall mounted dinky but good bookshelf speakers and a subtle sub.
I've just been looking at the Cambridge Audio Minx 22s. They look OK, and MUCH smaller than what I have..... I'm just not sure they'd give a decent enough sound. The smallish sound bars I've seen aren't fantastic.
Argh... decisions decisions......
Replace the sideboard and media stand with shelving, no higher than the media stand. Mount the TV on the wall (not too high, you'll crink your neck), speakers can all be placed on the top shelf. Alternatively, the main speakers can be brought out a bit on speaker stands, which would likely produce a crisper sound.
Small subwoofer behind the sofa to the right. Doesn't need to be loud, just something to deal with the low frequencies - you can put your cut over reasonably high to reduce booming form the alcove.
Mrs Boredom is EXACTLY right.. stop fannying about with pondering speaker and get a set of shelves in there
May I suggest Ikea... you're looking to create a shelved, adjustable area, with TV dead centre, speakers in sections either side, media players below (doesn't need to be centre) and books, DVD's etc in the rest
yopu DONT want backs to the shelves.. paint the wall white, get white shelves (cheapest) and running cables is easier.. with work you can clip them to the vertical and horizontal shelves to keep it looking good.
you want FLOOR standing stuff so
A) the wall is not under load
B) the speakers will work better
It will transform that room.
TV remotes/magazines etc can go on there too, and if the shelves are adjustable for height etc you can adjust speakers later
