    Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

I might possibly, perhaps have been given the green light to go for a new telly, so I thought I'd go the whole hog and get 4k and HDR, just to be on the safe side.

I've been looking at the Samsung UE49KS7000 and it seems to tick all of the boxes. My Yamaha RX-V679 now has HDR passthrough after a firmware update so I shouldn't have any issues there. Space issues mean I can't go any higher than 49-50".

Anyone know of any other TVs in the same price range as the KS7000 that would be better?

I can get it for £1099 plus £175 for the Sammy UHD BL player (8500, I think) and this seems a good deal.

At that size/price it might be worth looking at what Panasonic have available (I'm not going to be upgrading to 4K 'til some time next year so haven't been keeping up with anything except gawping at the lovely 70"+ demo sets in Currys..)

I've found (up to a few years ago) blow-for-blow Panasonic tend to flatten everything at the same price point (where it matters, picture, colours, blacks, response times).

    Remotes are rubbish, though.

Yeah, I would usually agree, but the reviews seem to say that Samsung have really cracked it with this year's SUHD TVs. I'll take a look though.

From the couple of reviews of the latest 2016 sets I've read, Samsung do seem to be up there (in honesty they've always been there), Sony have stepped up massively this generation as well. I seem to recall the Sony(?) per-pixel backlighting is a competition-killer outside of OLED. Not sure if that tech is around at your price point though.

What concerns me about pretty much all of them is they still can't do blacks and fast motion that well - the HDR requirements probably help but it's probably the main reason I keep putting off an upgrade and hoping my Plasma doesn't die.

And you've got me itching to buy a new TV now

Re: Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

Depends what you want. For Samsung I'd stick to the KS range, the lower models judder below 60fps, ie 24fps support for films. Great response times for games.

Sony manages pretty much everything, though their software is slower it does support Kodi, so in theory the platform could die off, but as long as you can side load the latest Kodi it will be good for yonks. Also they use the same platform as the 2015 series, which suggests it might be there for the long haul.

Panasonic seem to be a little slower for gaming 40ms Vs Sonys 30ms or Samsungs even faster. Though Firefox OS is probably the fastest smart platform out there.

Hisense are rumouring a HDR firmware update to their TVs, as they support 10-bit colour, but lack the software to drive it. Though thats a maybe.

LG has OLED, if you don't mind the candle burning twice as bright they doo shine well.

I am in the same boat, probably going to get a 55" Sony, but I like how their TVs look, I like to play games and Kodi is pretty nice. Samsung or Panasonic are super solid options. LG or Hisense I would really have to do my research on. Anything else no thank you.

Re: Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

I hadn't thought of the Sonys. My folks have last year's model, and the picture is nice, but the Android OS keeps crashing, meaning they have to reboot a fair amount. If you can sideload Kodi, this may help...

Any idea what the equivalent model to the 49KS7000 is?

Edit: Looks like they don't do a 4k model in 48-50in. Smallest 4k seems to be 55in

Re: Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

I just ordered a 55X8505C, it just popped back in.

Re your question: 49XD8077 or 49XD8099 (believe its just a colour difference)

There is a non-HDR option (7000 series) that they claim will be patched. Sony is pretty good at honoring those, but I think you want 4K HDR now.
Nearest to a review I can find, but US version might be different. http://uk.rtings.com/tv/reviews/sony/x800d

Re: Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

As far as I can tell, much like the X850D is the X85** series here.

I can't guarantee as its a US version and 43" reviewed not 49"

However they also reviewed the KS7000 so you can directly compare the two reviews.

Picture quality on my samsung ue50ju6800 is top-notch, upscaling is good, but if usage of the OS is important to you (e.g. switching between inputs often or recording from tv) steer well clear. Glitchy, buggy and just downright stupid and simply forgets my series links reasonably often.

I believe they've improved the OS in this generation, but the only thing I would use the interface for would be Amazon and Netflix 4k streams, providing I can get ARC working back to the amp. I've got Tivo for telly-recording shenanigans.

Re: Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

To be fair I believe Panasonic's Firefox OS and LG's WebOS are the slick smartTV systems. Samsung's Tizen and Sony's Android TV are a bit heavy for the cheap SOCs they use. That's just based on reviews. If I could have a 55" 4K HDR monitor I would buy one.

Re: Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

Well, I went for the Samsung with the half-price 4k Blu-ray in the end, and it fitted in the car, but it's currently sitting in the spare bedroom of my parent's house, still in box, cos I have to wait until our building work is finished before I can set it up. #frustrated.

Re: Another "Which 4k TV" thread!

The other issue I have is that the telly sits about 6cm off the stand, meaning my Centre speaker will get in the way of the screen. Wasn't an issue with the ue40b7020 we've currently got as the bezel on that is huge. If I swap my Tivo out from the stand and put the Centre speaker in the stand, will that affect things sound-wise?

I have a similar setup, my centre speaker is offset to the right a little bit on one of the higher shelves in the TV unit rather than directly underneath the TV (The Kinect sits there).

You won't notice, unless you have superhuman hearing.
