    Jamies School Dinners

Was ace. I really thought Jamie Oliver had had his day, and it was long ago. I watched Jamie's Kitchen, and while i enoyed it, watching those 15 little toe rags learning to cook was simply TV. Its a big money spinner. It was good but not exceptional.

However, while Jamie seems to be seriously loaded now, the bugger keeps working. And WHO EVER thought of this new show was inspired. Inspired.

Jamie decides to go and try to turn around a school canteen, where the single solitary vegetable available is peas...which never get eaten. The rules by which the dinner ladies and cooks have to adhere is quite mortifying...and the quality of food, provded by the state, is nothing short of mind numbingly bad.

Now lets take vitamins....no lets take iron....no lets take calcium.....no lets take ......lets take.....

Sod it, the kids eat sh1t.

Total sh1t.....(by the way...I'm an admin....I'm allowed to swear to put this into context....you aint....got it? Good)

And why.....wel what is the major contributing factor? Other than thefact the kids like eating crap?

Money...as ever. And do you know HOW MUCH MONEY IS ASSIGNED TO FEEDING EACH KID A BALANCED (yeah...laughable) diet every day?

    Who watched it?

    Who knows?

HOW MUCH MONEY IS ALLOWED PER KID PER DAY? FOR A FULL DINNER. To help them grow, to help them do games/sports, to concentrate all day at school....to help them build strong bones, god teeth, and healthy hearts?

    Who knows?

If you know, reply here...and make it in big letter....

you use the [ bracket to begin with, then the word size=7 then the other square bracket ] ...then you type the amount of money you reckon it is.....then you use this square bracket again.....[ then you use a / then the words size again, without the number, then the ] again.

    OK....

    go

Zakkly.....37p. What on EARTH is that about?

I used to have a bottle of milk as a kid, and that today would cost about 20p. So how on EARTH can we feed growing kids with 37p.

I know full well that my concentration slips if I've not eaten properly. So how is a child supposed to play football/hockey or whatever, and do 5 hours of lessons eating crap ?

4 pints of milk costs a quid, probably less at catering prices, so half a pint of milk will cost about 10p I reckon. Is that included in the 37p budget?

Anyway, again I'm going by bulk rate catering prices here, so: A kilo of spuds is 20p or less, so maybe 5p there for a decent sized portion of mash. Two catering sausages- 10p. Portion of frozen broccoli - 5p. Portion of spinach/peas/any other green vegetable- 5p. Gravy - 2p. I'd call that a fairly tasty and nutritious meal personally.

When I lived on my own I spent less than £15 a week on food, and I wasn't malnourished. It's a complete myth that good food is expensive, it's just not.

    2 problems....

1: getting kids to eat it
2: the crap that catering sausages are filled with.

The idea of the brocollli is perfect.....once again...getting them to eat it is the problem. Jamie has a MAMMOTH amount of work cut out!

Chicken and broccoli pie then. Equally cheap I would have thought. Catering sausages don't actually have a great deal of crap in them; yes they're high in fat and have filler like rusk in them, but they also have a good bit of protein. Use a catering sausage as part of a fry up and of course it'll be an unhealthy meal; put it with potato and veggies and you have a balanced meal. Fat is a necessary part of the diet.

It's the best programme on TV I've seen in ages.

It really is a mammoth task. He made a cassarole, which came in at £1.10 per portion. He made a soup, which came in at 62p a portion. He was shocked at how much it came in at.

However, I think he is onto a winner. His aim is to take over a whole borough of schools, and change the way they eat. Making the government listen.

You could see the obvious strain on both his working and personal life (he admitted his wife gave him a stern telling off), he really does care and is very passionate in what he believes.

Can't wait for next weeks show now!

Nora (right of pic) the "Cook" (self proclaimed as not a chef.... though she had a wild day at Jamies "15" Restaurant)

Cook, Chef or whatever....to be feared and respected
