Are wireless charging pads worth it?

Personally don't have one but i guess if you like to keep your charger wire hidden it's a good idea.

I've owned my iPhone X for around 8 months now and have yet to charge it using a physical connection in the house. I have to plug it into the car for Apple CarPlay though.
Wireless Qi charging is the future and I love it.

I am of the opinion that it's mostly a solution looking for a problem, that was implemented purely 'because we can', but like touchscreens will become the default and only option one of these sad days...

I mean you could say that about a lot of the Tech we use on a daily basis. It mainly just makes slightly more convenient

    I could say that... but I won't.
As for a normal plug-in-anywhere generic mini-USB cable, compared to one with a big charging pad specifically for wireless-charging a phone, I wouldn't say that is in any way convenient... or even wireless. Not really.

Agree with the first part - I see them as a novelty and not a particularly good one. For me, it falls into the same category of 'it really wasn't difficult in the first place' devices like 'keyless' car entry nonsense which has been implemented terribly and irresponsibly by many big manufacturers allowing car theft which has been on decline for years, to creep back up again because of the ease of bypassing the silly things. It's really not 'more convenient' when you have to keep the 'key' in a shielded box/wallet to get equivalent security to a standard remote fob is it? At least Thatcham seem to be naming and shaming the worst culprits now though, hopefully that encourages a move in the right direction e.g. security fixes if the manufacturers insist on forcing the things onto the public. /rant

I mean it's not like phones use a great deal of power but we should be trending towards greater efficiency, not backwards, and 'wireless' charging is a step backwards in terms of charging efficiency. All that work put into making highly efficient DC-DC converters in the charging system is just thrown away for a silly gimmick.

Having said that, an upside I can see is e.g. in public places where you want to offer a way for people to charge devices, but while reducing the risk of vandalism of things like USB ports or cables by morons with nothing better to do. In theory a flat charging surface should be less vulnerable to damage? I really can't see much point at home/work where you already have a charger though.

I wouldn't throw touchscreens into that category though. Granted they're probably used unwisely in some cases, but they do offer a great deal of flexibility when used correctly.

They offer the potential for options, but their functionality and adoption is usually at the expense of the other options, which defeats the point. That's not flexibility, that's replacement.

its good if you like to browse your phone before bed, no need to fumble around in the dark looking for the cable to plug in. one of those things once you try it, it is hard to go back

Re: Are wireless charging pads worth it?

It is a good alternative to the usual charger but I feel like it is better to use a plug-in cable rather than a wireless charging pad.

Re: Are wireless charging pads worth it?

i bought one for my S7, phone heated up considerably, I unplugged it and haven't used it since.

now got a Huawei mate 20 pro, it charges incredibly quickly using USB-C, wireless charging isn't going to match that.

however!, wireless charging pads in public areas is a good idea, having your phone on the table in starbucks or costa charging your phone? great idea. ditto for coaches and trains (distance ones, not commuter class). It means no one is scrabbling for the correct cable and fussing with connections.

Re: Are wireless charging pads worth it?

Is it just me that would like a computer case with a wireless pad on the top? Even one that could sense if a phone is on there and start grabbing your pics or something. That would be useful.

Re: Are wireless charging pads worth it?

I've never liked them. It just means that you can't use your phone while it's charging. It's not too much effort to plug it in with a cable.
