Simple really...do you own a TV with just the speakers IN THE TV......that actually sounds WIDER than it really is.....
not just a bit....even old sound cards could do that...I mean an effect good enough to make you wonder just how it does it?

My lovely 24" Panasonic TV's speakers are sort of rounded at the corners and the stereo soundfield is amazing (when I actually use them, my Home Cinema equipment is far too good )

my TV speakers didn't even work when it arrived..
but anyway, why you wanting virtual surround (if you were actually wanting it)? if it's discreetness your after you can get a TV with some properly dinky rear wireless speakers that will give a much better surround sound, or there are a number of separates options.
as you can see, my system didn't have discreetness as a top priority
Hehe well you can create a good stereo soundfield yes, but virtual surround? Nah. Only way to get surround is to have 2 or 3 speakers behind you and 2 or 3 infront!
@ fondie - is that Marrantz / Mission M74 combo i see there? Niceh! Corblimey ive got 2 x M73's in the living room and you dont need a sub with them! 6 x M74 must shake the universe upside down when ya turn the volume up!
Butuz
I got one for my other half already actually,........its damn fine. I agree it aint Dolby Dig BUT for some rooms there just aint no where to put rears in the correct space.....
anyway...its WIDENESS I kinda meant

The sound is absolutely awesome, i'm really happy with it, watching films is a completely different experience, and when the party tunes come out, and the floor moves to the beat..
When i got them speakers, buying the m74i's worked out cheaper than buying stand mounted speakers with dencent stand to go with them, it's rented accomodation so i can't start putting things on the walls i'm afraid, so i thought, why not!
I have considered getting a sub too though, a nice REL Quake i thought, tasty it's almost certainly not worth it, but can't stop that craving for bass!
now all that's left is to hook it up to the pc (doom 3 anyone?), just is an arse to get proper listening position for both tv and pc! + i really should fork out for sky+ too, but i just can't find the will to pay £10 a month to them when for them there really is no ongoing cost of providing the service!
BTW REL Quakes are far from the best subwoofers you can buy. Consider something else.
I built my own sub and the amount of low frequencies it produces is quite astonishing.
