Antique shop find yesterday :)
A Goldring Lenco GL59 in custom ply box, good nick, working, but could do with some TLC.
£25 :) The strobe disc alone is worth that, literally !

Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
I dunno about everyone else but I'd really enjoy a "how I restored this to it's former glory" thread.
Good find.
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
So would I. There's something about turntables that fascinates me.
Not sure how much of a market they'll be for a restored version, though. LP12 it ain't.
Nonetheless, I love theze TT threads.
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
LP12 it ain't, true, but it ain't far off !! These platters are 4kg in weight, underneath rim / idler driven by a fabulously silent motor.
I refurb a few of these, Ill make this the blog thread :) I have a few mods I do, including building up the bottom of the shaft of the main bearing, like this -
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...0c&oe=5DD06BCA
This uses a silicon nitride ball bearing, a new 1mm thick PEEK thrust pad, new oil, and a thumping great flange thingy to oil seal and bolster up the bottom.
Then I strip the arm down, and make a carbon fibre wand to replace the old one, might not be so in this particular case, but the GL75s that I do all have this now.
This one is from a CJ55 Walker TT Ive been working on -
https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net...46&oe=5E111FD0
Then the cabinet will be stripped, reglued where needed, cleaned, sanded and linseed oiled with a final coat of beeswax mix.
I've done about 8 Lencos to date and all have sold well in ebay :)

Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
I also had a good find, though 2 weeks ago. Bought a full set of the 1928 England team in the form of tobacco cards in a leather book for a fiver

Lovely job. Looking forward to seeing the end result.

....
Fair enough. I bow to the Hexpert. I must say it's not a model I'm that familiar with. To be honest, I've not paid that much attention to anything else since getting the Mitchell back in ... oh, prehistoric times. It performs well enough for me and, to my taste, looks fabulous. More like a piece of modern, abstract art than a turntable.
But I find TT's more interesting now, probably for nostalgic reasons, than I did back in the day.
I certainly sense a resurgence in interest in all things vinyl, and I even came across a range of LPs a few weeks ago in a supermarket. Can't be 100% but I think it was Sainsbury's. Only two I can remember visiting recently were them and Waitrose and it sure wasn't Waitrose.
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
Yeah, vinyl is back in quite a big way, just take a look in HMV :) But yes, Morrisons, Tesco and Sainsburys are all selling LPs alongside CDs.
The Lenco series are extremely popular right now with custom layered plinths going for 2-300 quid, and thats JUST the plinth !
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
Oh Bottom :( The arm bearings are knackered :( Highly unlikely to be able to find a replacement ball race, very small, very fiddly. Im going to have to fit a different arm. Didn't want to, but I don't think I have any choice.
On the up side, the cabinet isnt ply, its solid oak :)
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
Really? What's so special about the bearing? What sort of fiddly dimensions are we talking here?
It amazes me just what you *can* get these days just by looking online.
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
May I recommend slowing down that countersink, or better yet, using a single flute? It will clean up that chatter really nicely!

???? #Confused
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
TeePee, the countersink on the billet isnt a problem, yes some have chatter marks but it doesnt affect the operation :) Using a 12mm drill to CS it as my CS jams immediately on aluminium ! Even the slowest speed on my pillar drill isnt good enough.
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
Apart from RS , there are specialist outlets for hearings (ball, sleeve etc) which might be able to supply a replacement if you can get accurate dimensions.
Re: Antique shop find yesterday :)
Thanks Peter, RS dont do the right size but SimplyBearings.co.uk did :) sorted.
