    Are tv panels replaceable?

    Hi Folks,
My autistic 6 year old has just chucked his NES mini at the telly it was attached to and cracked the screen. It’s only a cheaply LG (lg28mt49s). Are the panels on them replaceable, or should I just buy him something even cheaper to replace it?

    Hi

For plasma it was for me not cost effective. The story with LCD might involve searching for the manufacturer of the panel or checking with the manufacturer but I suspect the same outcome.

    Good luck though m8!

    Replaceable? Yes, and no.

Mine packed up about 18 months ago, 4 years into a John Lewis 5-year warranty. It was replaced, within a week, and I got a loaner for that week.

But I got talking to the guy running the repair company JL sub-contracted. Firstly, the new screen was something like £280 on a £499 (new) TV. Which raises whether it's worth it or not. For me it was as, first, I wasn't paying it, and second, I really wanted SCART sockets and they were getting hard to find, even then. (*)

Secondly, according to the repair company boss, some screens have some kind of control electronics built in to the screen. They nearly always are beyond economic repair. But some, like mine, don't, and that electronics is separate modules. They may well be viable, depending on the age of the TV.

So, assuming he knew what he was talking about (and he seemed to) and wasn't blowing wind up my wotsit, the answer is .... a definite maybe.

Sorry but you'll really need to contact a repair centre I think.

(*) For anyone wondering why I need SCART, the answer is three HD/DVD recorders capable of in-machine frame-accurate editing.

    Re: Are tv panels replaceable?

For a 28" telly, a replacement will almost definitely be cheaper than a new screen. On a quick Google, an equivalent is about £180...

    Re: Are tv panels replaceable?

As Saracen999 mentioned - Its just not worth it. You're better off buying a second hand TV. Even if you do the panel yourself they cost so much compared to the value of the TV its just not worth your time. Check out facebook local ads or equivalent and just buy a used one. Its kind of annoying as I love repairing stuff...
