Just to throw something else on the table.
Have you considered a soundbar?

You can often get a set of Edifier speakers for under £100.
I have the old R1600 things, but they're rather nice. Newer models also reputed to be most excellent.

Meanwhile, your Z4 2.1s (2005 model, yeah?) are 9x3x3" HWD, with a 9x9x9" Sub box.
My RT1600s are roughly 10x6x8" HWD and don't need a sub box. Most newer models (£85-odd, apparently) seem about the same size.
I have mine just behind my monitor, facing outward at roughly 45º and there's ample room for a 17" laptop dock between them. The friend who bought me mine (on the strength of how good his were) has his on a shelf above his monitor... which I really should replicate, as his game noise levels are pretty stonking compared to mine!!
You could always put these under the desk, either on shelves or bracket-mounted, maybe fixed to teh underside of the desk itself. Perhaps directly on the wall, instead? These should fill a decent sized office/den/man cave with sound. The speaker wire should be long enough and you can get extensions cheap and easy enough.

I've got some MP300 plus and they're fantastic. Also, apparently, EOL, which is very sad, as the spherical satellites are very compact. But if you don't mind pre-loved kit they might be worth thinking about?
Most entry level Edifier 2.1s (e.g. M13[6|7]0, XM2) seem to run on (presumably the same) 2.75" drivers, leading to a roughly 4" x 6" speaker. That's hardly humongous - somewhere around modern mobile phone sized. You'd have to have a tiny desk for that to be too big? Even something like the Creative Pebble Plus - which boast compact spherical satellites - are around 4.5" in each direction. I'm, not sure you're going to pick up a 2.1 kit that's much smaller than that...
Use Iball for that.
Just go on google and type best speaker for computer in 2020 and there will be lots of review websites. Go through them and see what fits your budget and specs and buy them. Now a days due to technology enhancement you can pick any speaker blindly but its better to see few reviews before buying.

At first it was cool that the fitted in with my other logitech stuff, keyboard, mouse, headset, wheel, joystick, but there were too many issues with it:
1) Bass was absent on 3.5mm and BT connections. That turned out to be an issue with the latest firmware (that it came with) and got better when i flashed it back to the previous version
2) One of the big selling points of the screen sampler to get the speaker lights to match whats on screen, the right speaker didnt do anything. Turns out if you have a monitor bigger than 1440p it doesn't work, played with that for a few hours and found a work around
3) Even after working around 2 big issues in conclusion they sounded totally meh compared to what i was already using
When the refund comes through I might give the Z623 a try and get an LDAC supporting BT dongle to use with it.
Right, Z623 set up and running.
I think I am going to stick with these. Crisp and balanced sound and pack a punch when they need to. Did also pick up a LDAC supporting BT dongle to add wireless to them.
I have the Altec Lansing VS4121 PC Speaker - 2.1 with the Sub and it does the job
