Normally when people have large numbers of drives they are either some sort of archive where you don't access the drives in parallel, or they are spinning rust hard drives. It doesn't take much to keep up with spinning rust.

Compared to the 1Gb/s if you are lucky of using a consumer grade NAS box which many people find acceptable, it is way faster.

I was considering a NAS. or server solution later as they can be really expensive as if I were to do that i’d want to be able to run the plex server on them too.

Indeed, which is why instead of a NAS I use a Linux machine running on a cheap uATX board in an old Antec Fusion case for my storage. Sounds familiar that

Though I haven't run a media server for years, more of a VM farm here.

Don’t you have a problem with storage?

I'm just running a couple of hard drives in a mirror configuration, so the case is enough.

I was wondering if i updated to SSD whether I should 3d print some sort of frame for where the hard drive cages go, given I can squeeze a few SSDs into the space those two hard drives and anti vibration mounts use.

I bought a LeNovo TS140 when they were going cheap. Slap on FreeNAS. More than enough grunt to run Plex too.

no need to 3d print, just use bendy flat plastic strips, screw through them and suspend from the upper cage using dual lock. SSD doesn't care about orientation or being level like spinning HDD. So long as there's some airflow. ie you make a rope-ladder style system (if that makes sense)

There's the thing: I don't have any plastic strips. But I could print some

But while I'm in the CAD package drawing some strips, I might as well add a few details like chamfered screw holes and before you know I there is the ideal bracket.

quite - if you have the tech and no spare gardening ties then yes, makes sense.

    Re: Adding sata ports

Well that was a complete screwup.. I fitted the device, although it was weirdly tight and closed the lid, switched it on, it detected the new drive.. then a spark come out one of the top vents, looks like the M.2 (brand new motherboard) is misshapen in the middle. Dammit, now I need a different solution

    Re: Adding sata ports

Did you make sure the screw was located in the right place and wasn't in one of the smaller configurations? Which would have meant the M2 was on top of a screw and would have broke it in half

    Re: Adding sata ports

It was in the screw with the half cutout right at the end of the M.2 which reached the end hole of the M.2 slot

    Re: Adding sata ports

Definitely sounds like it has shorted somewhere, are you sure there were no screws left underneath and the M2 was inserted properly? They are generally firm but not tight.

    Do you have a pic?

    Re: Adding sata ports

I think I know where the spark come from, I assumed it was the M.2 because of the damage, it seems that because the gpu is so high in the case, there is a vent on the lid that scraped the psu wire leaving wire exposed in a tiny knicked hole that must’ve shorted because the lid is metal and must’ve touched the exposed wire.
