    Thin HDMI cables?

    Hi All,

Bit of an odd one this. I'm getting my house redecorated, and the builder has put conduit in the walls to run HDMI cables, but it's too narrow for the (old) HMDI cables I already have. I found these on Amazon:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0982B79WC

But 2m is just a little too short. I could do with 3-4 metres. The issue is the surrounds for the HDMI plug itself. Although the above ones fit, other ones I've tried like this:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08MZYQ43S

Have too much plastic around the (metal) HDMI plug to fit into the conduit.

The builder has already installed the conduit and plastered over, so I'm loathe to have him rip it out and redo it unless there's really no other option.

    Any help gratefully received....

    Re: Thin HDMI cables?

Might be a bit late to help, but Linus just acquired a very expensive cable tester and I'm pretty sure he said one of their first uses was to do a test on whether a load of HDMI cables actually performed to meet the claimed spec. Certainly, a bunch of their accumulated cables didn't.

Video on the tester went up in the last few days.

EDIT - I was in a bit of a rush last night and re-reading it today, I kinda maybe omitted the actual point. So if you'll excuse the aphorism, just like "all that glisters is not gold" (See Note *) the TL/DR Version is .... be careful buying cables on Amazon, especially as the length of run increases. HDMI cables are among the most susceptible to problems due to the frequencies handled, and the data rate required. Not all cables that look impressive are, and the longer the run gets, the more likely it is to fail or cause problems. As those problems can be intermittent, or merely degraded performance, they can be hard to isolate. It's a flippin' minefield. Price can be, up to a point, a guide. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

(*) I often find where these sayings come from quite interesting. I've always associated that one with Shakepeare (Merchant of Venice) but it turns out he wasn't above a bit of creative plagiarism either. If it's good enough for Shakespeare, I'm not above it either so with thanks to good old Wikipedia, .... Chaucer got their first (twice) with

    Re: Thin HDMI cables?

Would a joiner work so that you could get 2 of the thin cabled ones, I guess the joiner also has to have a very thin shroud as well

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/LANMU-Conne...dp/B0981PNXQW/

Thinking about it further if they disconnect it could be an absolute nightmare to diagnose and sort out

This is the closest I've found to the red slim header

    Re: Thin HDMI cables?

Have you tried sanding or filing some plastic off a connector? You would only have to do one end.

I did have an hdmi cable where the shell unclipped from around the metal plug, though it would be delicate whilst threading through the ducting.

Perhaps you could use a mini hdmi connector on one end:

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/CSL-Ultra-C...dp/B00QGM8NQO/

and use something like this to to get that back to full sized plug:

    Re: Thin HDMI cables?

Just a thought - how about using a mini hdmi to mini hdmi cable, and then adapters to convert to normal hdmi once the cable emerges from the wall? Not sure what effect the adapters might have on signal integrity though.

    Re: Thin HDMI cables?

I'd thought about mini-HMDI, but I guess the more the connectors, the worse the signal is going to get? Don't really fancy sanding/cutting connectors if I can get away with it. It seems bonkers that the shrouds are so thick (and apparently unnecessarily so).

    Re: Thin HDMI cables?

Sorry, just read the OP, so apologies to all the other posters if I've missed the same I'm about to post, but you may have luck with detachable HDMI cables, where the end plugs come off, looked at some for the siblings renovation a few years ago!

I remember seeing them at Kenable UK, I pretty much buy all my accessories/cables I need from them.

Aha there's a name to them now. Looks like they're using Micro HDMI and supplying custom headers with screws so that they don't come apart, makes a nice complete package suitable for wall installations.
