MP3 or digital recording

I want to record direct from a microphone to MP3 format. However I want a standalone unit to do this, I do not want a laptop with Musicmatch or whatever operating on there.

The small MP3 players/recorders record to voice, but I have tried it and the quality isn't very good, plus its fiddly to start a recording on most. Ideally I am looking for an MP3 recorder with a line-in or mic-in socket that will do the trick. Just wondering if anyone knows of such a device. It would also have to have a USB or some connection to get the MP3's off so they can be transferred.

Don't want a laptop cos it will not be conspicuous. :)

I dunno if it's any good to you, but a MiniDisc Recorder has a line in for you to record straight on to them, then connect it up to your computer and d/l the audio files. Would that work?

i would suggest a minidisk recorder, or failing that, how about a creative player? some of them have standalone microphone remote thingys..

Might do ... what format are they in though when you download them. Ideally I would want them MP3 so I can burn direct to a CD.

An MP3 dictaphone would have to be positioned correctly, and isn't ideal for what I need tbh,

The Iriver mp3 players have a line in, I have an H10 and the line in quality is great, it can record at up to 320kbps MP3. (line in is on the docking station) I think others have line in as well.
