just become interested in it over the past month and i want to mix some music to see what it sounds like :)

If you want easy stuff with samples, etc - buy dance ejay or something similar from your local Game.
Or... try out Fruityloops. Great for making repeating little ditties, drumloops etc.
If you fancy something a little more advanced, but not too difficult, try Propellorheads Reason. Amazing software for music programming.
If you have keyboards/instruments etc, send a line out to your PC line in, and have a play with Cool Edit Pro - for recording, and for gods sake I've forgotten the name of the midi program... Cubase! Yeah... Steinberg or something.

there is a good mp3 mixer - I think its called vrtual DJ.

I play around with Atomix now and then and its quite good, better with 2 soundcards I heard though.
Traktor DJ Studio is very good mixing product, not knocking the others but its the best ive used.

yeah traktor is the best i've used too,although the free version without updates can be a bit 'twitchy'.you will need two soundcards to monitor
my mate is doin a DJ course at college, and he said Cubase is the nuts, but damn hard without reading the tutorial thoroughly. i should be 'aquiring' it off him soon, so i'll giv it a go.
There is also PCDJ, can be linked up to an external mixer, which they also sell ( suprise suprise) Saw this running at the PLASA show quite impressive, but not as impressive as final scratch, but that cost's about £450, and you need proper decks to use it

Should have added this earlier, if you want to buy Traktor you can get an external break out box for it, which allows two sperate audio outputs for the decks and some other stuff i forget what.
Acid Pro is good too.
What music are you mixing together?
Takes a lot of time and practise to mix together (and picking the right songs).
