    extracting / embedding EXIF

Something in the way I process my photos obliterates the EXIF... Which is very annoying.

So a simple enough question, is there a way (with third part apps?) I can extract the EXIF from RAW (NEF) files, and re-embed them into processed JPG's // PNG's?

From experiance - Save For Web removes EXIF, Save As... is meant to keep it. However I am finding this increasingly not the case :S

I don't know of any 3rd party apps though

Theres a thread about viewing exif data on nikonians, might be worth having a look at the software they recommend
    http://www.nikonians.org/dcforum/DCForumID86/15419.html

failing that post a question in their software section.

Cheers for the linkage Flibb, but my issue isn't viewing EXIF data (I use Iexif already...) but rather retaining it...

Sorry read it wrong, found another thread on there looks like save as jpg is the way to do it. Think adobe bridge allows you to copy exif from one location to another, you could use that to sort any pics out you have allready done.

I've tried to come up with a response to this query that would be of general help but have failed to establish but one ground rule.

This is that you need to assume that whether EXIF information is retained or lost depends on the program you are using - even if you save to what seems to be exactly the same format in different programs.

I've come to this conclusion after messing about with Adobe Photoshop Elements 4; and three versions of PaintShop Pro (7, 8 and 10).

I think it is the case, for example, that PaintShop Pro 7 is completely ignorant of EXIF info and will lose it whatever format you save to.

In contast, PaintShop 8 is able to retain info when it saves as JPEGs or as uncompressed TIFFs.

However, EXIF info is lost if saving as TIFFs with LZW compression from V8 and V10 (and presumably V9, too) whereas Photoshop Elements 4 can create LZW-compressed TIFFs that retain EXIF information, as will its JPEGs.

Strange to say PSP 8 and 10's native image format - which saves files with a PSPimage file tail - also appears to throw away all EXIF information, even though the files produced are really quite large.

Not very helpful to hoodi, I know, but this does warn against making any assumptions until you know your software's full capabilities.
