There's a new revision of the iPod out shortly, it should be released mid April / early May and will be rather impressive or so the rumours suggest.

nooooo nobody wants that.. it'll just be 2mm thinner, have a 1 hour longer battery life, use a bigger screen (touch screen with scrolly stuff on-screen perhaps) and it'll have some special edition which has been badged up by some past-it band which old people (who can afford the damn thing) thing is still the one.

ipod touch rolling stones edition here we come.

If the rumours are right, it will be the Video iPod (not Ipod Video), which has a much bigger touch screen. More a PMP than an MP3 player.

I just find it a bit crap that the only reason Ipod have been successful was good marketing. It's taken 5 revisions of the original product to produce something worth buying. I mean any other company would go bust, but they had good marketing and some cash...

Looking at a company that works like that, how can you trust their new products?

Only people I know who have had Ipods have broken them - previous gen - but they go out and buy another because they don't know the other brands and Itunes has already taken over their PC (they wouldn't be able to use another MP3 Player anyway!).

Iriver is my favourite so far. Considering the price difference, is the Ipod really worth the extra cost? Really?

Sony's look better IMO, Ipod styling is looking a bit old these days. At least they have black.

Will have to take a look at the toshiba ones.

due to lack of vorbis or gapless support, i'd say they're still not worth buying

the killer for me is the battery life of the iPod, and the shear size of them with the battery life taken into account. I don't want to have to remeber to charge it every day without fail.

So, so true. Those are the 2 main reasons i simply can't buy one. (Well that and Apples DRM, but i would not buy from itunes anyway). In fact, I use Vorbis because it is the best lossy format for gapless, so they kind of go hand in hand for me.

LOL - reminds me of this video all this MS and apple war going down.

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...microsoft+ipod

*whistles innocently and runs away quickly from the debate*

I tell you what I have noticed though and this has happened for a few people. They get an ipod and start to "dip their toes" in the mp3 player market.

About 9 months later, they've bought something like a Rio player or a creative one to replace the ipod as it supports other formats, has better EQ setup and has other features that the ipod doesn't and doesn't have to use itunes (which is a bonus)

This has happened to a few friends, and thus the ipod to them was like a training potty before getting a better, more advanced player.

Why not just encode at a higher bit rate mp3, sure itll use more space, but you have 60GB

To be fair though, AAC is no slacker..

Still, I can't say that I shift away from MP3 when it comes to lossy format.

As for iRiver, I wonder why the dropped the optical out in the later models..

even at twice the bitrate, mp3 can't be as good as vorbis - it simply can't store sufficient dynamic range, and to be honest, stops gaining anything once you go over about 192k

to be fair though, the difference in quality between aac, vorbis & wma are pretty minimal
