Audio Decoder....

Sorry about this thread as I have little knowlage of technical terms for audio equipment. Basically, I am looking for a standalone box that is capable of decodiing Dolby Digital. (DTS would be a plus). It should have a few optical inputs and a few coaxial. I was wondering if you guys could reccomend me something or at least tell me what I should be expecting to pay for something like this. It would primarilly be used for my Xbox 360, PS2 and DVD player. Thanks

What do you want to do with the signal after it's decoded?

If you have existing amplifiers & speakers then you are after an AV Preamp/Processor.

If you want to power speakers as well then it's an AV Receiver, or an all-in-one system if you are on a budget.

Look for something from the Denon AVR range. Starts with the basic 1600 series and works up in price from there. These amps are expcetionally well featured, well built and sound great. Denon are notorious for having the fastest decoding chips for surround and are pretty handy for stereo music (as long as you feed them a decent analogue signal from a nice CD player, the DACS on board are rubbish for music).

Does'nt just have to be Denon mate good though they are. Marantz, Onkyo, Pioneer and may I even say Sony all do affordable great soundin kit. Albeit some sound better with movies than music and vice-versa.

Well I already have the speakers so it would be an "AV Preamp/Processor" then.
Edit: Just been looking at some, I didn't realise that some of them come with video functions. Thats an added bonus ... but they are way to expensive lol
