DTS vs Dolby Digital

If anyone has ever wanted to test their system, to compare DTS with Dolby Digital (in 5.1) I can 100%, heartily and with no doubt in my mind recommend this:

at £5.50 it is a total steal, and it is beautiful, stunning, and quite possibly the film I've been waiting for to really compare DTS superiority over Dolby Digital.

i'm going to beg do differ

different films have a different amount of effect when put through dts rather than dd. dts typically has louder surround channels, which is why it can sound 'better' even if its not as close to what the film maker wanted. the film might well (i've not watched it) show the biggest difference between the 2, but perhaps the dd encoding is just really carp?

Actually DTS is known to be far superior, it is far less compressed. Run through a few grands worth of HiFi you can really tell the difference. Slight noises that don't even exist on DD do on DTS. This is because the compression is better, also surround stearing is better due to easier alogorithms (obviously you need a decent decoder to make the most of it though).

i'm fully aware of that, however i believe most of the effect you hear by running off dts is due to the fact that the rear channels are amplified more..

dts has a variable bitrate - it claimed it was going to be 3:1 on all dvds, bit most (spiderman 2, for instance) use 6:1, which is still double the rate of dd (at 12.5:1) but not as good as it could be...

i had dd and dts on a cheapish setup (£400) and could hear the difference, but it wasnt really enough in my eyes (ears?) to spend lots on. most high-end amps have it built in so its not really an issue.

Maybe you're right...maybe they didnt put the time and effort into the DOlby Digital one, and spent the time on the DTS version.

Maybe they used the physical DVD disk space to use the DTS lower encoding rate.

I usually... No... Always go for the DTS soundtrack on DVDs though.. I'm with Zak

dts is rarely 1536 on a dvd - i've not personally seen one at this bitrate (but i'm aware they do exist - i think the 'superbit' dvds have it). i'm not arguing the differences arent there, but on a lot of films its nigh impossible to tell the difference.

i got rid of my dts stuff - my new telly has dd built in (of the same quality as my old setup) and its far nicer for it all to automatically switch over

if i still had dts i'd buy it.. as it is.. not my sorta film

It's a masterpiece, and even in SILENCE you'd love it. I was gob smacked by it's sheer beauty. It is a stunning film even if you HATE Martial Arts films, you'd fall for this. 100%.....guaranteed

zak : i think i've seen it (probably at cinema) - is it hte one where at one point theres some girl dying (i think) around lots of trees with a million yellow petals/leaves around?? did look good, but not my cuppa tea..

by the way. best investment i ever made for films was a ugc (now cineworld card). tenner a month for free cinema whenever/wherever you want (as long as its in the cineworld chain). simply cant go wrong - go twice a month and its paid off, get a mate/partner to get one too, and you'll go much much more often, and see stuff that will probably really surprise you.

Nope, but I have been seeing the adverts on TV for the DVD and they're harping on about "breathtaking, wonderful, superb"... I fail to see what's superb about what they've been showing me!?
