All,
Thinking of buying the Samsung DVD-HD950 or pumping that money into the Xbox 360.
Would the quality be just the same as using the HDMI port on the Samsung DVD player?
ta all

Sorry, I think I'm having a blonde moment (and I'm not even blonde, worrying) but do you mean would the component out on the 360 be as good as the HDMI from the Sammy ?
If so, in a word, nope ! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news and all that but the 360 is an okay-ish DVD player but not a patch on a dedicated job.
The 960 is due out anytime soon and I think it has better scaling (rumoured to be as high as 1080p ) but will obviously be more expensive too.
What display do you have if you don't mind me asking ?
Also, if you haven't already, check out AVForums.
Oh, and if funds allow, the 360 is well worth the pennies !

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I have a Samsung 32R so it wont do max res (1080p).
I might wait for the new model to come out and go with the cheaper sammy. I'm also think of building a media centre so that will connect via VGA/DVI or HDMI (not decided yet)
So that might be the best route?
There seem to be some pretty good deals available on the 950 and 860 already but you're right to hang off if you're not desperate.
If you do go for a dedicated player maybe audition the Sony £99 job (ns-76h) also. It's the current fave on a lot of the AV sites. It can be had for a bit less if you shop around.
I'd definitely recommend a media centre PC though. Got mine a couple of months back and I'm loving it. Only snag is I keep buying "media" peripherals I don't really need. And various software DVD players. And so on...
Good luck with whatever way you go !
I have the Samsung DVD-HD950 hooked up via HDMI to my Tosh 32wlt66.
Paid around £130 iirc & would say it was excellent vfm.
Built well, excellent features & plays just about any format of disk going.
Of course it will also match you tv rather well!
