No, its a FULL 1920x1080 image in both cases.

You might want to do a little more research into video resoutions.

Yes, but because 1080i is interlaced, that means that two separate fields of 540 lines are created for separate video frames. So each frame has to be upscaled from 540 to 1080 to display a progressive picture. Due to the limitations of upscaling a 1080i picture will not look as good as a 1080p. Have a gander here for some more info.

it's very rare for interlaced pictures to be upscaled. they are normally de-interlaced which is a very different technology with different results

It has to be deinterlaced so it can be upscaled though...

The main problem with most of the current gen sets with regard to 1080i is that they can't do it properly. Or at all.

As said above, to do 1080i perfectly you need x1080 resolution. Almost all of the HDready sets made before this year have a resolution of x720 or x768 but qualify for their HDready status by accepting a 1080i input. Problem is, they then scale it to their native res.

    I thought de-interlacing was the combining of the 2 540 pixel pictures to create a 1080 picture, picture 1 having lines 1, 3, 5... picture 2 having 2, 4, 6.
Not that well informed, please correct me (though with some links please!)
