I've got a dinky wee MP3 player out of Tesco and one thing I love is that it can display the lyrics of songs. Is this a standard capablility of all MP3 players as I never seen it mentioned in the spec sheets.

I don't think it is a standard capablility of all MP3 players ( especially MP3 players that aim at European markets ).MP3 player that capable of displaying lyrics are aimed at far east markets ( where karaoke is a very popular past time). It gives the owner time to learn the song before show off their sing talent in front of their Mates.
I gave one of those as a present to a friend.
As I recal, the instuction manual documented how to add lyrics. I think you had to provide a text file to go with each song with time stamps and words. There was also one song with lyrics pre-installed on the player so you could see how it was done.
Yup and it works very well. I'm surprised it's not a standard feature on MP3 players particularly as this Tesco one (Technika brand) only cost 20 notes...Originally Posted by chrestomanci

i cant see many people actually wanting the lyrics on a MP3 player!
do you have to set up the lyrics yourself or can you download pre setup txt files?
Considering how easy it is to implement I'm surprised more companies don't do it. You can download the files needed. The Technika one I have takes lrc files.

One way around it is to buy a MP3 player that displays album art and make you own .jpg lyric sheets for each track. A bit of a pain, but if you really want them that badly then its something i guess.
My CnMemory one will play lyrics as well...
i have enough anger at people wandering around the street texting not looking where there going. if they were doing that for the length of a song it would be madness.
to be honest id never actually thaught of that on an mp3 player. but then again it would be of no use to me, i judge an mp3 player on how fast i can find the song i want and how loud it sounds when your walking home after being in a rock club most of the night. obviously battery life and capacity in there too but hey

Where do you get the lyrics from to start with though? Most of the time the lyrics on the usual sites are either completely wrong, or just a little bit wrong So that suggests its fans who are listening to the songs and writing out the lyrics and making a mess of it on the hard to hear ones, which defeats the purpose.

iPods have supported the viewing of lyrics for over a year now, in both 1st and 2nd gen iPod nanos and the 5th and 5.5 gen iPods.
Lyrics can be added manually in iTunes or automatically via utilities that grab the lyrics from websites.

Search Google for the utilities - both PC utils and Mac widgets are available.
I download my lyrics automatically using a program called MiniLyrics. It's a brilliant program that I highly recommend.
Tak - thanks for the info. Had not idea that iPods supported lyrics. I've been sticking with my £20 USB player from Tesco for the past few weeks and I have ot say I think that'll continue. It does the job, does what I want, sound quality is fine, etc.
