    Quick bit of speaker advice

    Yea or nay on these:

    ... for £40?

They'll be going in the living room with the MCE PC. I'd get some fancy pants audio in there but I don't have the money, and one of my house mates already spends far too much on speakers for his room...

Just need something for playing music decently and watching movies/telly. The room isn't massive.

    Cheers guys!

I have these in the front room and for the money they are great, the bass is good and the speakers are fairly crisp. The only thing is the power/volume and bass control nobs don't hold up long under everyday use (You may find just looking at the nob turns the music up full blast).
    Rhyth is selling:
Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 XR Di ll LD Aspherical (IF) £230 +pp
    Canon 50mm 1.8 II £50 +pp
    Proven good copies.

Volume will be controlled through software (keyboard, mouse or IR remote into MCE)

Thanks for the words of warning. Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem for me, however.

One thing i would say is get some speakers with dedicated tweeters if you can. I have logitech Z2200 which have 2.5" drivers IIRC and no tweeter. They really lack nice trebles, expecially compared to my B&W 601 S3 which have lovely tweeters IMO.

Perhaps look at a second hand set of Logitech Z640?

It is pretty ickle. Not tiny, but not large.

The aim is for something better then the telly speakers... not something fantastic. I'm not on a mission to piss off the neighbours. Now if I was... we'd be going for something a whole lot more extravagant.

The PC itself only has an ALC650 sound chip in it. Not point going overboard for that.

    Steve,

I use the T7900's very similar but 7.1 and with tweeters on the front speakers.

Have to say they really did not have the grunt to fill my room with sound, plenty of bass as the sub if pretty beefy but it just sounded pretty weak, surround didnt work well at all.

I now have them on my PC downstairs, rear speakers are fitted (well, nailed) to the wall and it sounds fantastic in this small room and the surround works properly.

Since picked up some mission and JPW radius with amp for £100 and although only stereo affords a lot more options (i.e easier to plug stuff in, I have decks, shuttle, sky, DVD and game cube). Granted you might not find a deal as good as that but after using the T7900's for DVD and some downloaded TV I would have to point you to a non_PC_speaker set if your front room is of any decent size.

I did a thread about my upgrade if your interested, http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=77790

Oh and if you do go for them, you can remove the covers to reveal the cone with a silver surround that looks pretty cool.

well, power (in watts) is not directly related to volume - its alot about speaker size that relates to the noise output. i used to have a set of top-end creative speakers, i think they were 5x6 watts, and they were more than loud enough for any situation. the only thing that might be lacking a bit is the sub - i'd say you need about 15-20w going to a small-ish sub in order to make it kick correctly..

edit : just read the specs. volume will be completely fine (from a maximum point of view).

Mixed opinions then. I think I'll get them with the intent of putting them in the living room. However, if they prove inadequate, I'm sat in the middle of a pretty poor 4.1 system right now... would consider it an upgrade

    Thanks for the help folks.
