    Post 40"+ 1080p HD Screen

Yep, repeat of the question that seems to be floating round this forum a bit.

I'm looking for a 40"+ (i.e. 42" or 47", but might consider others) screen that can handle the full 1080p (1920z1080 or more) resolution (I know, expensive, waste of money, etc., but it's what I want, not necessarily what I'll get ).

For info it will be in a reasonably sunny room, being driven by a PC, so it'll have to accept a DVI or HDMI connection (With HDCP support of course). With HDMI 1.3 being just around the corner, I think DVI might be more future proof. Sound will be handled by an independent audio rack. Finally, because it's being fed from a PC, it does not need a tuner, SCART inputs, composite inputs or even speakers.

So far I have only uncovered the Westinghouse series of screens, but they only cater to the American market. Unless someone in America is willing to temporarily receive and then forward a Westinghouse screen (Sending me a 'used' Westinghouse screen, saving me ridiculous amounts of tax) to the UK, I'm stuck searching for this elusive screen.

So, do any of you guys have any suggestions?

most of the 1080p screens on the market that i've seen won't actually accept 1080p signals - they accept 1080i, then scale up.

also bear in min some brands (e.g. samsung) require an HDCP-capable graphics card if being driven digitally by a PC

Thanks directhex, even if you were the only one to reply.

I appreciate that I would need a HDCP compliant video card (Getting) and a suitably compliant screen.

My own searching has found two suitable screens.

    There's the Toshiba 42WLT66 here:
    http://www.gottatoshiba.com/catalog/.../regza/42WLT66

    Or the Acer AT3705-MGW here:
    http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page4...&crc=861929139

Personally I'm leaning towards the Toshiba, purely because I know Toshiba make reasonable TV's even if I do have to find a HDMI graphics card (And yes, they do exist). But, I still have some digging to do.

If anyone has any suggestions, let me know them here.

The tosh is 1080i and I suspect the acer will be as well, although their site is less than helpful.

On a 40" screen you will never be able to tell 1080i and 1080p apart......

You really want a 60"+ screen to be able to notice any difference.

Yep, seconded, I think the Sony X series has 1080p support too.

Also the new Sony SXRD rear-pro set has 1080p support but I dunno if that's any use to you or if you're just looking at panels ? It's also about half the price of the 46" X.

I'm waiting for 1080p rear projectors to turn up (I have to save up first, so it's not like I have much of a choice admittedly ). The TI HD3+ chip has been around for some time and already ships in the States as I understand it, so I reckon it won't be long until they're on sale over here.

I'm planning on going for at least 56", possibly larger. I don't have particularly special eyes, only about 20/20, and so I'd have to sit too close to a 42" 1080p screen to get the full benefit.

Rave, I see you're looking for a DLP rear pro set but the Sony (LCOS) I mentioned is 1080p and available any day in a 70".

However, it's only gonna be about 4k so you might as well just keep saving and wait to see if they bring the 70" Qualia over from the US. It's currently selling for about $10k. Bargain

I''ve started saving and have also started begging and pleading with the missus to see if she'll allow the wonder that is the 55" version into our lives sometime in the future. I figure if I beg for a few months we may actually have enough dosh for a down payment by the time she agrees !

Hi guys, I'm back (Darn business trips to un-internet'ed patrs of the world).

Seems like an awful lot has changed since I posted the message at the back end of August.

First, the Toshiba is indeed only 1080i. The Acer is a 1080p screen, but connecting to a PC and getting 1080p is not easy (Vast overscan).

Second, I'm gaining more love for the new range of Sony's as mentioned above. New favourite is the Sony KDS-55A2000U. 55" of screen, for little more than a 40" LCD (£1899 with stand, or closer to £1600 alone from Amazon). Plus it has a HD compatible HDMI port which should go well with the HDMI HDCP compliant graphics cards I'm eyeing up.

Now all I need is to actually get some money to pay for all this. The fact that I'm in the process of buying a house isn't helping...

I feel your pain ! We bought the house last year and are only now getting the telly updated, despite me repeatedly saying "... and the new TV will go over there" quite confidently when we moved in. Furnishings are a terrible drain on finances

I'm still after the Sony SXRD. Still begging. Still not winning.

Well, I'm lucky. When they sold me the place they gave me £7000 to take the furnishing package. Now they're trying to claim that back, saying I owe them £7000 but getting lawyers involved in that one. You can't show someone a £7000 discount, sign an agreement and then just take it away.

As for a significant other, I don't have one to deal with. Not quite decided if that's a benefit or not, but definitely makes begging easier!

Trust me you will. 1080i is pretty poor and has an obvious flicker. Given a choice between 720p and 1080i on my 45" screen I go for 720p all the time as 1080i looks dreadful. 1080p will produce a far more stable and all round usable image.

No, there is no flicker.....you obviously have not demo'ed them side-by-side.

ALL plasmas and LCDs de-interlace 1080i before displaying the picture, hense you cannot get flicker.

If you are playing a game such as Gran Turismo in 1080i, you may get what you think is flicker but its the game engine, not the screen.

Watch any movie in 1080i and its a rock-stable picture.

agreed. you won't get flicker with an interlaced picture (in fact, on 100hz crt tvs, you get MORE flicker on progressive scan than on interlaced, as they can only do 50hz @ progressive). you will however get what is called 'interlacing artifacts'. the severity of them depends alot on the source and how the processing works (from some films for instance, you will get none) but if you don't know what they are, chances are you won't notice em.

I've got a rear projection DLP which must make the difference. Note that 1080i still won't be as good as 1080p (or 720p) cause 1080i is a 540 line picture so if it's upscaled then it'll be upscaled from a lower resolution picture.
