    Question 1080p on a 1080i display

By accident I set my xbox 360 to the 1080p setting (max in the manual says 1080i), however my osd setting for my display did report that the signal was 1080p and the picture did seem to look okay, but I wasn't going to leave it on just in case I did any damage.(it was on for about 5 seconds )

Any one got any ideas as to what damage it may do if I do apply the 1080p setting or if there is any way of finding out the max display setting for the panel?
    Tv is a Haier L37V6A8.

I'm guessing it won't do any damage at all, what would probably be happening is that is tv is taking the 1080p signal but outputting it as 1080i

Like all HD ready tv's will accept a 1080i source even if they can only display 720p

In fact your set looks like it's only capable of 720p anyway - "Resolution 1366×768", in which case it's simply downscaling the picture

Thanks Stoo, it's just that the ati control panel in windows keeps reporting the maximum resolution of the panel is 1920x1080 . Still 720p looks good enough to me

is that thru dvi? i'm yet to see a hd tv where dvi is recognised properly on a pc - run it through vga and you'll normally get much better results - dvi is only designed for 720/1080..

Couldn't disagree more - when I hooked up my HTPC via VGA (was awaiting new components at the time & didn't have DVI) the image was horrible. DVI is spot on, with a little overscan correction of course.

DVI is THE way to connect, not VGA and it most certainly is not just for 720p/1080i etc. It will carry any resolution that the screen and the source supports.

With DVI you will get 1:1 pixel mapping if you need it and if you set it up correctly. You will never get that with VGA.

DVI has functioned 100% correctly on every display I have tried it on.

thats certainly not the case for samsung screens, which don't support 768p (the naitive res) over dvi/hdmi

if you get poor quality via vga, you may simply need to tell the screen to autocalibrate - should be able to map the pixels 1:1 without fault
