What DVD???

Hi

It has been quite a while since I have looked into the AV arena, and the reason for my query is that my trusty Onkyo DV939THX dvd player has given up the ghost. It cost me the best part of £2000 in 2000. However I am guessing that things have moved forward quite alot in 6 years

I am looking to buy a 40/42" 1020p panel at the end of the year, not sure what yet but atm either a Sony LCD or Pioneer Plasma. I have a big DVD collection (750ish)
so would like a player that 'upscales' (if that exists)

Was looking at a PS3/360 as a player as well - are they any good (well the 360 anyways?)

I've heard the 360 is supposed to be pretty good at upscaling.

If I'm right in thinking, it only upscales (upto 1080p) when connected via VGA where as with component it will run at 480p or 576p.

unlikely. the 360 has no hdmi connectivity

Go for a plasma, not LCD - pioneer probably. Plasma is better - see this website for details>

I would also ensure you get full 1080p resolution otherwise you will become dissapointed in the near future.

It doesn't output digitally to a TV - it's either VGA or component.

Ok, thanks for that clarification. DOes the HD add on drive output in the same way?
