    Botanic Gardens

Went to the Botanic Gardens this morning, and although I didn't get to the Orchid Garden, still managed to get some decent shots. Apologies to those of you sick to the teeth of flora and fauna, but I can't resist putting some up here...

    Contructive criticism appreciated as always.

    What gave it away?

Just after I got into photography I spent a lot of time in Indonesia, which has a huge number of photo ops with the most incredible plants and animals, and spent waaaaay too much time taking pictures of flowers....Eventually realised that while they look pretty, given the right light and location, anyone is going to be able to duplicate what I'd done.

So went through a period of resisting the urge to capture everything green, and then took it back up after seeing some amazing repeating patterns which occur naturally in plants. Now I love to get some really abstract shots, ones which require your eye to be set for that particular style.

Anyway, I was at the Botanic Gardens, what else am I supposed to take pictures of?

I'd love to get hold of a good zoom (70-200 IS 2.4 is my dream lens - I think I said this somewhere else recently in Hexus) and work with people candids, but it's not going to happen until I get some cash saved.

#1 & #4 are actually my favourites, although that's probably because I've spoiled myself taking shots leaves shown in #14. There were pink and white fangipanis falling all over the place and landing in strange places...must have been a hell of a trick getting into that leaf in #10 (unless the leaf curled after the flower landed).

You serious about the 70-200 2.8 non IS? I've been wondering about this lense for a long time as I love my 85mm 1.8 but would like a walkabout lens (even in 'mug me white' and the fact it's heavy) which offers a little more range. Still, even with the non IS is more than I can afford atm. I like the primes, so maybe I can be persuaded to go for the 200mm 2.8...

These just make me want to be back there. I'm still suffering from withdrawal symptoms after my 2005 month-long trip to Singapore and Indonesia.

    Great shots

They're all really, really good. Sorry if that's an easy reply but they really are!

What are you using ibm? I've got a love of flowers and the wildlife too but haven't managed anything like those...

Agree, some nice pictures there. I was actually thinking of heading down to Kew Gardens at the weekend to take some snaps.

It's an incredible part of the world for sure. I spent a lot of time travelling around Indonesia in the past, and have been here several times...wish I had time to get up through Malaysia/Thailand maybe even as far as Cambodia/Laos/Vietnam....

Thanks for the praise, always good to hear . I'm using a Canon EOS 10D with a 85mm f1.8 (my favourite lens). Most of the pics will have been taken at ISO 100 and an aperture of around f2.5.

Photoshopped until they bleed mate! I always try to resist, and just go with what I capture, but I can never help myself...just have to see what they look like with shadows/exposure/contrast and saturation
played about with. And once I've seen them looking more 'punchy' I'm never satisfied with the original....Maybe once I get back to the UK I'll put the originals up and you can judge for yourself.

yeah loads of pro's go on about how their 2.8 non IS is sharper than the IS version - i'll dig around for a link

if you don't like the mug me white lens - go for the Sigma 70-200 2.8 then

problem with primes is the constant lens changing.. unless of course u have 3-4 bodies hanging off ur neck

I remember being really impressed with the helo shot when you posted it, perfect DOF too...

I've got to say that once I'd got used to my three primes 35, 50, 85, I just couldn't go back to my wife's 28-135, which was slllllooowwww by comparrison. My 85 is my walkabout, which makes some shots a bit tight, but when you're shooting flora, you can usually take your time getting the shot right. For anything else it be difficult, which is why the zoom is calling....

Anyway, decided to hold off for the time being, as the prices aren't that great over here anywhere. Maybe if I can get to Hong Kong sometime soon....
