New cooler or reuse old cooler?
I have an old thermalright true spirit 120 tower cooler.
I've just upgraded to a 5600x and the wraith stealth is a bit noisy and not terribly efficient compared to the spire I had on my 1600. From my understanding the boost clock will only last as long as the temperatures allow, and the wraith stealth sees temps increase pretty quickly and the clocks lower just as rapidly. I could put my spire on but I fear the performance increase will be marginal. But I have my trusty old true spirit sat there doing nothing. I can get a new AM4 compatible mount for £15, or can try my hand at drilling new screw holes in the correct place. I'm not afraid of a little DIY.
But I've seen a cool master tower cooler that would match beautifully for fairly cheap. But I feel bad letting my old true spirit waste away or go to landfill if there's nothing wrong with it.
Would I see better performance from a new tower, or will it be very similar to my older. Might my older one actually be better given it looks slightly larger?
Thanks for any advice in advance!
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
I take it you're referring to the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo?
It's a great cooler, punches greatly over it's price bracket.
I've used one in previous builds and managed to overlock my old Haswell i7 and maintain less than nuclear temperatures.
I'd stray away from DIY'ing your CPU cooler as it's designed to fit, any DIY could render the plate weakened or it might not fit properly resulting in an imbalance in pressure on the CPU IHS.
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
If you have access to a pillar drill and can mod the bracket why not try it? If your temps are stable on all cores at the end of it then job done. If not, you have to buy a new bracket so you're no worse off.
Also I'm not sure the corsair forums are the right place for this - you might want to ask a mod to move it for you.

Thanks it's great advice :)
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
Oops yep. I'm new to the hexus forums. Still finding my way around!
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
If you can mod it and get it to fit I don't see why you shouldn't use the old cooler
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
Well it turns out those mounts are STRONG!! I managed to get one hole out of my hss metal drill bit before it blunted the end and wouldn't bite anymore. Bought some more expensive ones and they wouldn't even bite into the mount. Gonna go with a new one instead.
Thinking of a deepcool get. Reviews on it look ok and I think it will compliment my build
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
I'd be really interested in hearing how your new cooler performs and what cpu temps you are seeing with the ryzen 5600x! Just recently upgraded to the same cpu myself.
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
I was in the same dilemma when I upgraded to Ryzen from Intel. I had a Corsair H55 AIO that I need to buy an AM4 bracket for to make it work. I ended up selling it for about £30 and using that money to buy a Hyper 212 Black. If you can sell off the cooler and then reinvest that money in a new cooler than I would recommend that
Re: New cooler or reuse old cooler?
just re-use the old cooler as it's still in good order and save yourself some cash for a new ssd/games etc, while at the same time reduce wastage to the planet earth :D
I have the same CPU and had similar concern as you did, with cpu temp hitting 95c & fan noise quite noticeable. Switched to a Be quiet Dark rock pro 4 and never looked back. keep the AMD stock cooler as a backup in the garage.
