RAM not working at correct speed

    HI all

I've just built a new system using the following....

AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition
    Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P
    500 GB Seagate ST3500418AS Barracuda 7200.12
    512MB XFX HD 4770
    4GB (2x2GB) Corsair TwinX DDR2 XMS2, PC2-8500

I've also got 2 dvd drives and a total of 3 hard drives but currently only 1 dvd and 1 hd to reduce the power at the mo to be on the safe side. (500w psu)

I have tried clean installs in both Win 7 and XP pro 64 but still can't seem to get my ram working at correct speed.

In the bios it only sees it as ddr2 800 and not 1066
I have flashed to the latest bios F5 but this desn't seem to make any difference.

When i run easytune in win 7 it says my memory is pc6400 NOT pc8500.

I have tried switching on EPP and also setting the memory manually, but when I do this windows won't run and I get BSOD.

Also when I boot up occasionally it will post then not carry on after listing the processor.

Any help wouyld be greatly appreciated.

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but wasn't sure

    Cheers

Re: RAM not working at correct speed

Seems strange its not going to 1066 automatically or when you use the XMP profiles either. When you set it manually are you changing the RAM volatage to 2.1v ?

Have tried manually setting voltage and also used the EPP voltage to auto.

Did u set the latencies to 5-5-5-15 as well as the 2.1v? Also use CPU-Z and see what memory speed that reports, its shows 667/800/1066 on my system.

Sorry but i cant think of anything else you could take your RAM back and ask for them to exchange it for a different set and see if that works instead.

or just run it at 800 - tbh theres not much difference.

EPP is an Nvidia standard and XMP is an Intel standard. Those presets are not compatible with an AMD CPU+IMC on an AMD based board.

As asked above, did you try setting your timings and voltage manually? Keep in mind that PC8500 DDR2 memory will show a PC6400 SPD when you look at it with CPU-Z. This is normal and is necessary for the board to boot the memory the first time or to boot after a CMOS clear.

Re: RAM not working at correct speed

Oh I've also started another thread in the scan forum as wasn't sure if it might be a mobo problem. There is a lot more info there about my problem and what I've tried.
