    A8N SLI and PC3200XL

My Friend had this setup a few days ago:
    A8N-SLI Deluxe
    AMD 3500+
    4x Corsair 512MB XLPT (2x matched pairs)
Working fine @ 333FSB (wouldnt run at 400 - something to do with the memory controller in the cpu if i remember correctly?)

Bought X2 4200+, blue orb 2, artic silver 5 as a tempory upgrade (new system build later on) and it failed to boot.
First he thought it was the cpu and reseated it. It booted up and he went into the bios to check things and exited without saving changes (no changes made). It then failed to boot, fans spinning, no bios, no beeps etc.
A few more reseats later and he finally thought maybe its not the cpu - plugged in his speakers and got the 'system failed memory test' sound error.
He is currently running his memory in single channel mode using 2 slots, he went throught the 2nd slot with the 3 remaining memory modules and only one made the pc fail to boot.
Logic suggests this module is faulty, but in the past he has randomly had 'system failed memory test' one or two times before on this motherboard with his old 3500, reseating (mixing up the slots) usually fixed it.
Why is this board so problematic with memory? Any suggestions?

I moved your post to keep it seperate from the other thread. It's easier to focus on your issue this way.

Has he done a complete clearing of the bios by clearing the CMOS? If the board is that picky over certain slots, it may be a board issue. He should blow the memory slots out with compressed air.

Also, you did not indicate a memory voltage. He should set the memory voltage to the 2.75v to 2.9v range.

    Re: A8N SLI and PC3200XL

    Hi
Voltages were set to 'Auto' - but I believe he did read a while ago, when he first got the memory, to set it at a higher voltage and he cant think why its changed to Auto - unless the bios did this automagically when he changed his CPU.
He has now moved the 2nd DDR module to its correct place, to give 1GB dual channel. He then tried the extra two modules to give 2GB but this gave 'system failed memory test'. After removing the 'faulty' module, he went back into the bios and changed the ddr voltage to 2.75v and its now working with all 4 modules. This seems a little odd that one module out of 2x matched pairs only seems to work with a higher voltage but hes happy to live with that.

Now thats working there are 2 more questions (same combination)

    1. His memory timings are supposed to be 2-2-2-5 (CAS Latency-RAStoCAS-RASPrecharge-tRAS) yet this motherboard auto detects them as 2.5-3-3-5. Should this particular combination be running happily at 2-2-2-5@400Mhz with 4x512MB and an X2 4200+?

    2. Will this memory be any use for overclocking this cpu (with relaxed timings?) and if so any recommended settings to get him started?

    Thanks for all the help

    Re: A8N SLI and PC3200XL

Keep in mind that these modules are OCing modules and they need 2.75v to run. It is not a defect:

He'll need to set the latencies manually. However, with 4 DIMMs, you may not be able to run them at 2,2,2,5.

OCing will be entirely dependent upon the system as a whole. With relaxed timings, this memory should OC well but, it will be limited somewhat by using 4 DIMMs and possibly other system factors.

Mine reverts to 3-3-3-x when installed in all 4 banks with the A8N-SLI deluxe and the 3500+

Just curious Lee, do you know what core revision your 3500+ is?

    Re: A8N SLI and PC3200XL

    Sorry didn't see this.

If I remember correctly it's the "Venice" codenamed core I've got.

Good job I checked this thread - I've been getting quite a lot of random, non related BSOD on my system recently but I've just noticed that I've not increased the DDR voltage as it's still at "stock" levels since the BIOS was cleared.

    Re: A8N SLI and PC3200XL

The "sweet spot" on this memory for me was always about 2.75v or so. More voltage did not seem to do much but make heat.

    Re: A8N SLI and PC3200XL

    Hurrah!

Set my voltage of my RAM to 2.75V, swapped CPU to a faster one and I've not had a single BSOD since 8pm last night. I've got the black perminent marker out and made a note on the inside of my side panel for the voltage to be upped to 2.75V so the next time I fiddle I'll have a visual reminder
