    mixing memory

hi I've got a pair of dominator PC6400 atm, lookin to upgrade to 4bg but its hard to find the 6400 now, so I was wondering if I should keep the 6400 and get 2gb more of 8500 ( i know the new one will slow down). Or will I be able to overclock the 6400 to match the 8500? or sell the 6400 and get a 4gb kit.

ps. all the rams I'm talkin about are corsair dominators.

    Thanks for any advise.

    Re: mixing memory

We discontinued the Dominator 6400 a while back. Based on current memory pricing, you are actually better off getting a 2 x 2GB kit as you can avoid many potential issues by not mixing 2 different types of memory.

Even though issues are possible, they are highly unlikely as long as the new 2x1gb set are the same speed and run at the same frequency. If very unlikely you will encounter any problems.

    Re: mixing memory

The odds are in favor of it working. However, no memory manufacturer can guarantee stability when users mix modules. So, we have to recommend to the side of caution when users ask about mixing. If we advise him to mix and then the combination of modules will not operate properly, then we have put the user in a bad spot by handing out incorrect advice.

Defo get the 2X2GB sticks as you would kick yourself if you end up with a problem. As you said they will come in handy as spares.
