But what benefit does this approach have to the day to day user, what task will they be running which will require all that extra power?

Not trying to be rude but this discussion has already happened; previously in this thread. As I hope you'll understand I'm a bit tired of repeating myself, or the discussion on the pro and cons. Hope there's no offence taken :)
Plus I don't want to cause anymore drama.
Having looked a Llano a bit more(having listened to Cat, Water and Co) I can see why AMD have taken this approach; to me it's risky but if it takes off it will be a clever one. The solution I'm looking for will be trinity, with the full fat bulldozer modules and GPU, that's a better balance to me.

No of course not but i looked back a few pages and i haven't found any answer to the question. Plenty of statements which say 'intel is more powerful' but nothing to explain why that is actually of any importance to the general user.
The reality is there is none to very little. The only place the i series shine ahead really is benchmarks and e-peen.

I feel a 6 core Llano would of had kick Intel of it's perch as Intel needs, due to their pricing monopoly with their Core i range of CPU's.
I don't see then point in any Laptop or mainstream desktop CPU having more than 4 cores. TBH I'd rather see Llano have 2 cores that are 40% faster rather than the 4 slow cores it has.
This is one reason I think trinity will be a particularly good Mainstream CPU. Allegedly 50% faster than Llano but with no more cores
I believe that means 2 Bulldozer modules which is an indication that Bulldozer cores are substantially faster than the K10.5 cores.
One day, coders will learn how to properly use multicore CPU's and APU's. Until then, single threaded performance is more important than multithreaded performance provided you have at least 2 cores.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
I looked through the Anandtech Llano review again and I mentioned this comment:
"Note that this comparison is without AMD's Turbo Core enabled, but more on that later."
http://www.anandtech.com/show/4444/a...apu-a8-3500m/2
So basically, with Turbo Core you will be looking at better performance. Second generation Turbo Core works across all cores.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Any more news on the full fat bulldozer models? after building a pc and still wondering if to go with a 2600k or a AM3+ build with a 955 for now then bulldozer later.

It is so advanced it developed itself three months before Hyper Bridge(tm) and it took so long to get to market because it was too fast for the Intel chip catchers..sorry...engineers..to catch..sorry...produce them.
I'm still waiting for the Compu-Global-Hyper-Mega-bridge
let's see who gets that reference.

Only (iirc) the Anandtech review found very little performance improvement in situations that should have been benefitting from Turbo Core, which suggests that it's not necessarily working particularly well. I think we'll have to wait for more mature retail products to be reviewed before we really know how much difference Turbo Core could make.
Not to mention the fact that the 100W desktop parts don't get Turbo Core anyway...

Sounds like it is still months away, and little to go on for performance estimates.
The BD version of Llano is said to be 50% faster, but whether that means clocks are 50% up or it has 6 cores no-one seems to be able to say.
Am still happy with my 955BE, and they are very cheap now!
But then a 2600K gets you performance today.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
A8 Llano on Aria for £105 - pre-order.

BD Llano will have a completely different architecture so clocks and core counts are irrelevant for comparison.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Hopefully, some cheaper motherboards will be released too as the current ones look expensive:

The lack of Turbo on the 100W parts is a bit of a fail IMHO.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
With the IPC improvements Llano has over the Athlon II X4,I would suspect an A8-3850 will be similar in speed to a Phenom II X4 840. So the IGP seems to add around £30 to the total price.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Maybe they are leaving room for some higher-end parts with turbo?
