This sounds like what Nvidia did with the GTX480 which was followed by the GTX580 only after a few months.
Edit!!
When I say next few months,I mean early 2012.
I don't think it is quite the same as the Nvidia situation.
Here they have designed BD for it's first outing on AM3+, but in putting it out for FM1 socket they have to create a new set of masks anyway, so it makes sense to include what they learnt in the time between.
I'm sure at some point they will update the AM3+ part, but piledriver would have to be a stonking improvement to make it worth while ditching BD.
Nvidia had a dog of a part with rubbish yields, so they had no choice but to re-spin the 480 design.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
This shop lists Bulldozer as being in stock on the 22nd:
http://www.shopblt.com/cgi-bin/shop/...er_id=!ORDERID!
AFAIK,it has been accurate in the past with CPU release date.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
I am hoping the four core Bulldozer will be a big improvement over the E8400 in my gaming rig! :)

It means nothing. Do you know what version of AGESA was used?? AMD have said you needed the latest version. Also, there are other expects of OS support too. SMT needed software support from Microsoft for implementation in the OS and AMD recently released a Linux OS patch/code for Bulldozer support(many servers use Linux).
Hence, until launch I would take any of these "leaks" as not necessarily being representative of final performance.

I'd agree, things will hopefully improve.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
By single threaded performance, do you mean SuperPi? As I've said before, it's a terrible benchmark with very poorly optimised code (compare to y-cruncher if you need proof), not representative of any real world applications I know of. Pay it no attention whatsoever. For example, a 1.5GHz mobile Celeron is somehow much faster than the 2.4GHz desktop part (both Northwood, same generation), probably entirely due to the smaller cache - I can tell you that's very far from being representative of real world performance.
Edit: Comparing SuperPi to y-Cruncher, both using 1 thread, 1M digits. That's under 2 seconds for y-Cruncher, over 35 for not-so-superpi.

Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
"Old" bulldozer still isnt out yet and time is rapidly heading towards the end of 2011, and now the rumour mill is starting on the new chip coming in 2012?
Do people just make this stuff up or what??

Quite normal - no tech firm waits for the last product to get old before designing the next one - a 5 year lead time isn't at all unusual, and if you have a problem with one product there's no point delaying all the others further down the line unless you have to.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
Gah. Nice one, throwing a spanner in the works. Get the 8150 or wait for Super-bulldozer?
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
its always like that with technology, you will end up waiting and waiting as you will end up waiting for PD/enhanced bulldozer and also wait for ivybridge then you will be told the next revision will be OMGWTF PWNAGE so wait again. Best thing is to wait till both competitors have released their competiting chips and buy what ever is best for you.
I.e wait for BD see how good it is compared to sandybridge and buy one
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
That's what I'm planning on. TBH, the only time you should wait is for a *brand new* technology. E.g., not upgrading from a single core to a new single core, when dual core is just around the corner.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
indeed, thats why no one should really worry about enhanced bulldozer or ivybridge as the only difference is "3d transistors" is i remember rightly.... not much else :D.
Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat
I think the key improvement with Ivy is the GPU. I read about a 60% IGP boost?
