The article also states that Vishera will have a 15% IPC improvement.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

when they say 'core' do they mean module?

I only ask because the A4 only says 2 cores which in bulldozer advertising talk (with the whole first 8 core CPU stuff) would actually mean 1 full core.

Also annoying they are using K suffix to denot unlocked...what was wrong with just calling it a black edition

    STOP CHANGING NOMENCLATURE!!!!!

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

They mean cores. Bulldozer and Piledriver have two integer cores per module but only one floating point unit. This is the reason it was marketed as cores, but the problem is that many applications are floating point heavy. Hence, this is why the FX8000 series probably should have been called a quad core. It is also probably why improved scheduling shows improvement in lightly threaded games, as more resources per thread are available for the floating point unit.

The single floating point unit in many legacy operations is slower in Bulldozer than the two dedicated units for each pair of cores in the Phenom II and Trinity. Now,if the floating point unit in Piledriver is improved, together with the clockspeed increase over Llano it should be enough to make it quicker(hopefully) in floating point applications.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

Well this is where the con meets its solution though surely? The weak FPU(relative as its only one per two cores vs the normal 1 : 1) on the cpu is countered by the strong IGPU as GPU are floating point power houses, i believe that is correct?.

This is why we are at a crucial stage, we are at the point where soon GPGPU will be 100% implemented and when that happens it means AMD has it sold as any downfall from their cpu side will be bumped/fixed by their strong gpu side. So basically AMD are playing a waiting game for everything to merge to this point really

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

Not 100% convinced by the TPU story, tbh. I'm pretty sure that the graphics cores in Trinity are VLIW4, *not* GCN. If the clock speeds are right, though, and Piledriver delivers the planned IPC improvements, these should be pretty impressive performers...

The thing is though,if the HD7500 and HD7600 series are rebrands they would be VLIW5 based anyway. So,the important question to be asked is whether the HD7500 and HD7600 series are VLIW5 based??

I thought the answer to this was yes, they are VLIW5. Not seen anything to the contrary at least.

It really does seem the 32NM issues, are starting to be resolved now.

    Re: AMD - Bulldozer Chitchat

The 8140 is new, slightly lower clocks but 95w TDP and the 8120 is a re-release with the same clocks but also with the lower TDP. Shame there is no sign of a 8170 at the same or slightly higher TDP with a bump in clockspeed.

I would have hoped the lower end chips would be down to 80-70W TDP if im honest.

Overall it looks like a positive step for AMD, are these still being made in GF or have they shifted to TSMC?

GF. There is no 32nm process at TSMC.

    There has always been a 95W 8120.
