Changed motherboard and CPU now SSD won't boot?

Basically I'm trying to boot up my Abit IP35 Pro XE along with an E8400 but it won't seem to boot with the SSD at all. If I use another HDD then I can boot fine and I can even view the files on the SSD and copy them.

I really don't want to spend time doing a reinstalling on the SSD so I was wondering if anyone knew why I can't boot with the SSD?

It gets stuck after posting (gets through BIOS with no problem at all) and states that I should use the CD repair service but I tried it and it doesn't find any errors (I don't think there any errors at all as it works fine with my AM3 system)

Hope someone can help me as this is an annoying problem!

EDIT: I have tried native IDE and AHCI mode too

So just to clarify it is seen by the bios etc so its an OS issue?

Yup it is seen by the BIOS and the Abit board is indeed running the latest BIOS version.

Re: Changed motherboard and CPU now SSD won't boot?

Was your SSD the boot disk in your old computer?

If so you'll probably need to make sure that you change the boot order in BIOS so that it doesn't try to boot from the SSD until you can format the drive and reinstall windows. Changing motherboard will often require a windows reinstall.

Using another hard drive as the boot drive? If so it should just be a case of telling the BIOS to boot from the other hard disk.

You can't use the SSD as a boot disk in the new computer without reinstalling windows - windows installs are motherboard specific and while sometimes you can get away with it if the motherboard is similar, it's not usually the case.

Well it managed to boot now but it says my copy isn't genuine and I can't use the mouse or keyboard.

Is this a retail OS or OEM?

Trying to use an existing install on a different motherboard (even if it has the same chipset) is just asking for trouble.

You might as well save yourself the bother in the long run, back everything up and just reinstall.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

As the install process detects hardware physically present and installs drivers accordingly and to suit, it's always a bit questionable as to what's going to happen if you make changes, and especially major changes, to the hardware. You are quite likely to end up with drivers loading that shouldn't, drivers that should be loading not being there, and configuration parameters set incorrectly.

The result is that it's always something of a lottery. You might get away with it, and you might not. You might be able to monkey around and get it working, but how long it'll take is another matter. It might end up being longer than a fresh install would have taken.

I have to say that after trying, some number of times over the years, to take "short-cuts", I've given up and tend to do things the long way round .... which often may end up actually being the short-cut. It's certainly much easier on my frustration gland and my blood pressure.

Re: Changed motherboard and CPU now SSD won't boot?

    It's retail.

I guess what you guys are saying are true. It's probably going to be easier just to reinstall everything, currently backing up everything onto my HDD but I have most my media and stuff on there anyway. Guess I'll leave a copy of the OS on the HDD as for some reason my HDD still works with my AM3 system but my SSD will only work with the AM3 system and not with the socket 775 system.

Re: Changed motherboard and CPU now SSD won't boot?

I first installed Windows 7 retail on a Core 2 Duo motherboard and later upgraded to i5. All I did was boot up the same install of Windows 7 on the i5 system and it spent a while looking for drivers then told me to reactivate Windows. I've had no real problems since.

Re: Changed motherboard and CPU now SSD won't boot?

When I use my HDD with my AM3 system it just installs the drivers then restarts and works totally fine. It doesn't even ask me to activate Windows!

Well this thread can die now, I installed everything on the SSD again. (Well it was pretty much only W7 and Firefox and msn haha)
