Which heatsink to get.

Hi

I have an Intel 2500k and currently have an arctic freezer pro attached to it.
I am soon going to be buying a new case (pretty focused on the NZXT Phantom at the moment) and was wondering which heatsink people would recommend. I think I’m more interested in air cooling though i was tempted by the Corsair h100.

Hi, there are so many CPU coolers out there, I wouldn't be able to recommend something particular.
But I was browsing for PC case fans today and found this fanless CPU cooler by accident.

I think it's awesome

The CR-100A comes in a bundle while the CR-95C is the CPU-cooler only.

According to the specifications it can be used for CPUs with a TDP of 95W and less.
I just imagine this cooler to be complemented with a low rpm fan to raise efficiency even more.
It cost a little fortune though.

Anyways for a 2500k what cooler you need depends on what you want to do with the CPU.

A simple 4.5ghz OC you'd probs get away with a hyper212+, cheap and effective for the job cos SB is nice and cool.

Now if your being more ambitious i.e 4.8-5ghz and have a higher budget to match the Noctua NH-D14 is where its at. Just bear in mind its HUUUUGE and may play funny if you have ram with large heatspreaders though.

Those are 24/7 OCs I'm talking about, just remember its what you want and how your case is laid out that matters. No point spending loads on a cooler if you aren't gonna push your cpu or don't want silence.

If your getting the phantom, for the love of god get the white one

The Noctua NH-D14 or the Thermalright Silver Arrow, these are currently the best air cooling heatsinks on the market right now, but as Doherz pointed out, ram with tall heatspreaders will not fit underneath these coolers, Noctua have a list of compatible ram that will fit under the NH-D14 on their website.

Wow thanks for all the replies, may I just start by saying that heat sink is ridiculous, what are the temps like with it?
I've been looking at the NH-D14 as it seems to have a lot of praise my only concern is that if I install it there will not be enough room for the side 200mm fan on the phantom :/ (White and black one ofc )
Though after checking the Silver arrow specs it seems like that would fit in pretty nicely.
In regards to overclocking I think I might as well push the boat out now and get a nice heat sink rather than wanting too further down the line

is this photoshoped? or sink is for real? dont really understand where you put all the other bits, unless onboard option is used on everything, then again, whats the point in keepin temps low on stripped rig?

Impressive bit of kit. Makes my scythe ninja look tiny....

Havn't checked compatibility but something like that would go well with a llano 3800 where there are no pcie graphics to bump into.

Personally, if you are getting a decent-sized case, I think the tall towers with 2 x 120mm fans are awesome....like http://www.scan.co.uk/products/corsa...-1366-amd-am2-......fans set in a push-pull configuration and with your BIOS or SpeedFan setup correctly (and case airflow correct ), you find the cooling they give and near-silent operation can be brilliant.

There are plenty of coolers based on the same design.....some you need to purchase an extra fan for though.

I heard the A70 fans aren't PWM. Does that make much of a difference?

Yes, will mean you can not control the fans on them.....so will not be a quiet as a PWM setup.

And also, I read that the thermal compound that comes with the A70 is pretty meh. Apparently it's like play-doh. But I guess buying a decent thermal compound won't break the bank

Is there considerable benefits of the A70 over, say, the Hyper 212+ in terms of performance and mounting?

Haven't mounted either of them....but most are easy and come with mounts for all modern sockets.

The performance between them is roughly the same, think the A70 edges it marginally....

I'd get the silver arrow. Looks well awesome. And from the temperature benchmarks Ive seen. Its actually better than the Noctua whilst under load.

I've been using the ProlimaTech Megahalems and found it to do v well. The latest version is their Armageddon cooler so I'd happily go for this if I were building now.

Then there's the Genesis, which, with 2 fans mounted, would also cool the motherboard (RAM area mostly, but it's still blowing down).

Similar to the massive one shown above, if you have space for it a Sythe Orochi.
Massive but would keep the noise to low levels.
