    which processor?

Hello, I've been quoted for these two pc specifications. I mostly use the CS5 package and AutoCAD (mostly 2D), which do you think would be best? the package with the i5 processor is about £30 more but has less RAM. Thanks in advance.

    HP Desktop
    Intel i3 3.1gz
    4gb Ram
    1tb HDD
    DVD +/-

    or

    Advent Base Unit
    Intel i5 2310
    3Gb Ram
    1Tb HDD
    DVD+/-

    Re: which processor?

The i5. RAM prices are at an all time low and it's usually easily user-replaceable. Or just ring them up and mention the fact and see if they'll throw in an upgrade.

    Re: which processor?

What's the actual price for the two systems? scan do some very well priced budget systems that are actually quite powerful.

    Re: which processor?

To build a similar spec PC to the advent yourself would cost about £300 btw....and you could even build an AMD hex-core with more RAM for about £300.

Scan even do a very cheap insurance as a safety net as well if your a bit hesitant to self build....but it is very easy and you get a lot more for that money.

    Re: which processor?

there's a bigger difference than i first though actually. the HP is £313.00+VAT and the Advent is £408.33 +VAT. Don't think i'd be confident building it myself. These prices are from PC World, any ideas on better value online retailers? I want to but a complete PC - Scan looks like it doesn't do that? cheers

    Re: which processor?

For me any company that would install 3GB of memory which will completely trash the performance of the system as it cannot operate in Dual channel mode and should be avoided.

    Re: which processor?

This system should do the job:

    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...3b33dfbda7a3b5

You can get 8GB of RAM for around £30 to £40.

This system comes with a 23" monitor:

    http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...3b33dfbda7a3b5

However, the RAM is not in dual channel so I would get an 8GB RAM set. Also, the monitor is a TN one so might not be the best for image editing.

I thought modern machines could operate the overlapping bit in dual channel these days.
Assuming the machine is 1GB+2GB, and not 0.5+0.5+1+1.

Edit to add: I expect the 3GB system has 32 bit Windows installed. If you don't have access to Win 7 64bit install media that could be a hassle.

    Re: which processor?

I'd never buy an Advent PC. I think I'd rather get a Scan PC if I didn't build it myself. Oems take components out of cards to cheapen them and usually have propitiatory connectors and custom cases. This makes replacing something as simple as replacing a PSU a problem!

    Re: which processor?

Yeh agree with what the guys say here. My sister bought a pre-built PC last year for £700, and I priced up the components for a total of only £350-380.... they rip you off big time.

Build yourself, it really isnt as hard as it looks. And its FUN!
