Best time to upgrade?

I'm looking at updating my CPU and Motherboard... just wondering when the prices will drop a bit? Are Intel or AMD bringing out a new range any time soon? Or are there any other variables that cause the price to drop a decent amount?

Intels new X79 chipsets are coming out in a while, but a 2500K would get my vote for upgrading now. Im not a fan of waiting for new tech. As there is ALWAYS new tech coming out.

a 2500K is the best bang for buck CPU atm IMO. You dont need the 2600k if you are just gaming.

Bought a 2500K for my brother about 6 months ago. Really nice and quick CPU! Just looked at the receipt and the price has actually gone up! (on Scan anyway) by around £10..

Good CPU for the money though. I just updated my graphics card so I'm happy for the moment, but can wait to upgrade for a few months if the prices are gonna drop a lot.. I guess they won't with the X79 chipsets though.. as they're in a different league?

I think the X79 stuff will be much more expensive tbh, i would just get the 2500K now if it were me

Your card should be alright if you are not struggling with some games, or a new 560Ti would be the right card to go with

But if you dont have one, an SSD will give you the most notable speed increase

The best time to upgrade is when you need to

Intel are replacing the X58 range soonish, so if you were thinking of getting an i7 950 or something then probably wait, but their mainstream range (sandy bridge) won't change much - currency fluctuations will do more.

Last i heard from teh X58 replacement is that the cheapest CPU woudl cost near 1k mate. the days iof buyinga high end cpu for around £200-£300 is long gone. i7 920 range was the last affordable HIGH END **** homie.

I very much doubt that, the highest end CPU you can buy is around that price. No one can speculate price till its released.

I would actually, £10 bet that they wont start at about £1000

The reason for my point of view is that there are already budget boards being showed off, if the CPU's were going to cost that much they wouldent bother with low end boards as everyone would be able to afford high end boards.

Why do u think they made teh SB models and the i5's? its because these boards were aimed at casual users with £200 to spend on just the cpu to make teh x58 rpelacement a £1000 cpu.

Basically the X58 replacement would be priced same bracket sa an extreme. i hope im wrong but its been said before by intel

They won't start at £1000, that's ridiculous.

The i7 920 launched at about £270, the 940 about £400 I think. I'd guess the skt 2011 chips will probably start around £400 as well, if they have a clear performance lead over sandybridge, otherwise they might have a 'budget' chip around the same price as the top SB but with lesser performance for gaming (consider the lynnefield/bloomfield overlap).

i hope you are right. but even starting £400 is off of many peoples budget and creeping into "extreme intel chip" territory in terms of price
