    Safe Voltages for Core i5 2500K?

    Fellow Hexites!

    In a predicament, have a friend selling his Core i5 2500K CPU, I'm tempted to take it off of him, though I'm concerned about the voltages he's been using it at, think he put through 1.43v for 4.6GHz for a few months, all stable, he's also put 1.48 through it for 4.8GHz.

    Now what concerns me is the info I read somewhere of not exceeding 1.38v on LGA1155 CPU's a while back, so with that in mind, could he have reduced the lifespan of the CPU? Or even its ability/performance levels without knowing?

    Or am I just being completely paranoid?

    Thanks.

    Depending on the cooling but yes those level of voltages would be likely to reduce life span.... The more important question is WHY did he need to pump 1.43V just to get 4.6? I recall getting 5ghz on 1.39v.... over 1.4 seems a bit silly IMO.

    How old is it? if its less than a year old then definitely pick up the intel overclocking warranty for £12(3 year term), just for peace of mind, if it was me id certainly grab it as then i know if it dies it dies. Know one really knows if intel can tell if you destroyed a chip from OCing or not but tbh £12 to protect a £140 chip is easy math and we all know SB chips are very reliable on stock!.

    As above. I had a quick mess about with mine last night and it would boot into Windows @ 5GHz w/ 1.44v - maybe he just had a crap clocker for uber-high speeds?

    for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Thats what I was thinking too mate, really high voltage for the OC, given I'd seen people get that from 1.38v and below.

    The CPU was brought in a system build, so would the Intel plan still work? As I presume the CPU would be classed as OEM? Its definitely under a year old, seen his receipt.

    So would I be able to still pick up the extended cover from Intel? Purchase form them direct?

    Thanks.

    Probably mate, though TBH, I'd probably clock it to 4GHz if that or leave it at stock knowing me. So should be within the safe limits I would have thought?

    Thanks.

    Re: Safe Voltages for Core i5 2500K?

    I think the most important question is how much is he selling it for?

    I bet you he overclocked it using the automatic oc tools in his bios. They always set the voltage far too high. If he also had load line calibration on then I wouldn't touch it as the voltage spikes would put it over the 1.48. Unless it was £50 that is.

    Nowhere near that LOL, if only.

    I've been having a look around the use of 1.5v isn't unheard of but TBH I'm not going to go through with the buy just for peace of mind due to it being OC'd at such voltages.

    Tht and I've decided to upgrade a couple of my rigs to IVB from SB.

    Thanks.

    Re: Safe Voltages for Core i5 2500K?

    Hey guys random question, but seems an appropriate place

    What sort of Volatage would be required if overclocking an I5-2500K to around 4.3Ghz? Is it better to overlock via the Bios, or is there separate software that will be better?

    Cheers

    @OP
    You should get your friend to run the Intel CPU diagnostic tool to tell if its degraded to too much voltage voltage/heat. http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...&DwnldID=19792
    For reference I've known guys use ~1.5v for a year with no ill effect. I've also seen guys using ~1.52 for a few months that have suffered degratation.

    If you have a board that can use Offset and LLC then you should use that as it will run the CPU at much reduced voltage when relatively idle.

    @Tezmo88
    Most 2500k will do easily do 4.3 with 1.35v or less

    1.40v to achieve 5GHz for me.

    He seems to have went way too crazy with the voltages!

    Op - mine is stable at 4.7 with 1.37v showing in CPU-z

    Agree with the rest, he seems to have pushed it way to high!
