3570k vs 3770k - which one to buy?

Need help to decide which one to buy between i5-3570K and i7-3770K.

Scan just released the prices; i5-3750K is selling at £173.94 and i7-3770K is selling at £250.74.

Will be using the new pc as main rig for daily computer, casual gaming, photo editing using Adobe Lightroom and to host some VM images for testing.

The main difference is 3770k has Hyperthreading which is useless unless you plan on doing things like video encoding or other heavy tasks like maya/large photoshops. You mentioned you may be using some of these programs so it may be worth it if you have a lot of extra cash floating about, but personally I would not spend another 75£ just for hyperthreading.

As above, if you have the budget then go for the i7, if you don't then the i5 would do the things you mentioned without a problem. I recently got a 2600K and wouldn't get a I5 again

I would get 3570k for gaming and 3770k for transcoding video ect.

Hyperthreading looks good in task manager. Not sure it will add too much to a gaming session though.

I am thinking of going for the 3570k too. Upgrading from a first gen i5! Only other possibility is waiting for the 2nd gen stuff dropping alot in price and getting a cheap 2500k.

I only do gaming on this really though.

Re: 3570k vs 3770k - which one to buy?

This is older article about i7 2600k hyperthreading:
    http://www.thegeeklynews.com/2011/07...-intel-i7-cpu/

    And about Adobe products:
    http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1106790

I personally would buy 3570k and spend saved money on different upgrade.

Thanks everyone for the reply. I have made up my mind and bought the i7-3770K today
I am thinking that the extra threads / logical cpu will be benefit for me since I will be running some VMs.

Re: 3570k vs 3770k - which one to buy?

I've been trying to decide between the two myself but tbh the extra I will save by getting the 3570K can be put to good use somewhere else in my build, for my needs I can't really see any added benefit for the 3770K.

I hope that 5-10% perform boost you get in very rare circumstances running test VMs was worth the extra 45% price hike.......

I wonder why people ask for info when it seems they do not understand how to use it......or was intent on buying the over-priced item anyway..... *sigh*

Re: 3570k vs 3770k - which one to buy?

I'm pretty much in the same boat, on one hand I work with video editing and streaming on a weekly basis but then again is it really worth the price difference? Couldn't find any benchmark on HT with video editing software so far.

Re: 3570k vs 3770k - which one to buy?

Same problem here too the 3570k will do me for almost all the daily tasks I do however I have been informed (ordered ) that I will be being asked to put a load of video files together to produce DVD's for a couple of charities I do bits for I have budgeted £500 for the full upgrade (motherboard, processor 120gb SSD, 2 Gentle Typhoons to replace my dead ones, and some more TX-4) but now am contemplating finding the other £75 for video editing. Some say it's about 10% better but early testing is putting the 3770k upto 30% better on encoding. However for me I think the important word there is upto 30% for the most part it's just not better enough to warrant an extra 30% on the price.

I think I read somewhere that the 2 chips have the same encoding engine, so are the same speed (within seconds) when it comes to video encoding. Ah yes, here it is...

In fact, the whole article may be of use to you...

Re: 3570k vs 3770k - which one to buy?

I've settled on the 3570k as I don't really do anything that requires HT and would prefer the higher overclocking capacity as HT creates more heat.
