2nd and 3rd Gen opteron motherboard compatibility

Hey there, long time reader first time poster.

i wanted to get myself a nice server motherboard that i can play about with it for folding or experimenting so i thought about this:
    Arima NM46X NM461
www*rioworks*com/server/Download/DM/NM46X-1*pdf (replace the stars with "." since i have less than 5 posts unable to put link normaly)
I can get my hands on one fairly cheap and provides both pcie and PCI-X so i can use some spare infiniband cards i have laying about.

It is a Dual socket opteron board and it says it supports 2000-series CPU's.
My confusion comes to the CPU since i'm unable to find a specific CPU support list i'm not entirely sure whether it will support only 2nd or 3rd Gen CPU's and i'm abit cautious since i've not played with opterons before and there's a heck of alot of them.
I was planning on getting two AMD Opteron Quad-Core 2356 2.3GHZ to chuck in the thing but i'm unsure if they will work with this mobo.

would anyone beable to offer any advice on this?

    Thanks in advance

If it is just for playing, then I would have thought you want to get a complete motherboard/cpu/ram setup second hand. Something like:

If you want performance, probably better off getting a Phenom X6, as 6 fast cores will probably toast those 8 old ones.

Re: 2nd and 3rd Gen opteron motherboard compatibility

not really for playing i just wanted 8 cores of opterons and play about and just playing about with programs and see how different ones perform with more threads or faster clock. My main pc is actualy a Phenom X6 1055T black edition that i use for gaming

edit: oh and sorry apparently i need 100+ posts to go look through those classifieds :/

As sorry, the link was 2 socket dual core (so 4 cores) opteron 280 with 8GB of ram on a motherboard for £25, now sold. Enough to play with NUMA memory layout without costing much.

For most things I would have thought your 6 cores would be enough.

Re: 2nd and 3rd Gen opteron motherboard compatibility

wow that was cheap i would have snapped that up right away as a b-day prezzie to myself heh.

yeah the 6 cores are enough for what i need but i fancy a comp on the cheap(poor student here) i can connect to my main PC via infiniband and have a plentiful amount of power so it can last me a couple years of giving it jobs i don't want tying up my CPU cycles if i want to game. i'm patient at looking for deals though. might see if i can grab something else at an extraordinarily good price on ebay
