Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat
Yeah, I was using CPU to distinguish from APU - the Kaveri APUs feature steamroller but on socket FM2 and with IGP. I'm more wondering if they'll do a Steamroller without IGP, and if so what socket they'll stick it on. You'd assume there'd be at least an Opteron based on it, at which point it would seem strange to not produce a consumer FX CPU from the same silicon. From that I'd tend to infer that they may release a new entry-level server platform once Delhi has had its run (so late 2013/early 2014) and expand that into the enthusiast market. It's the same basic approach that Intel have taken recently - if you think about consumer SB coming out first by some distance, then the workstation/server targeted SB-E being dripped down into the top-end consumer space. I would assume the hope is that Kaveri can compete with whatever is Intel's Ivy-Bridge replacement in CPU throughput so the consumer APUs can also leach into the the lower enthusiast space (much like SB has - how often does anyone recommend a s2011 build on here? ;) ) and then the server/workstation Opteron parts will be harvested into the higher enthusiast space.
I hope that's right anyway, because if not AMD are basically abandoning the enthusiast PC market... :shudder:
Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat
Yeah it wouldn't make much sense to abandon the enthusiast platform unless everything merges to APUs (including 4+ module + L3 cache models) so all consumer parts can use the same socket or something.
Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat
I would be happy if they serviced the enthusiast segment with the FM2 platform, but not with mainstream silicon.
Drop back to about 80 shaders to free up plenty of silicon real estate, stuff some L3 cache in there instead. More cores would help in some benchmarks, but personally not bothered.
That would currently leave us with a power disadvantage. My AM2+ motherboard can source 140W into a CPU, 125W chips are common. If they stick with just 100W on FM2, then we take a hit on possible clock speeds.
Edit to add: I should learn to type faster :D
Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat
TBF platform compatibility has lasted ages already, and continuing to use what is a relatively dated platform puts AMD\'s FX line at a bit of a disadvantage in terms of efficiency/latency among other things.
Piledriver will still use it, but no guarantees beyond that.

You need to update your computer description!!:p

"Spotted"'s a bit rich from the Inquirer, given AMD actually posted this to their own facebook feed
I'd be amazed if Vishera "requires" watercooling to run at 5GHz, since the chip in that story is quite clearly running on an all-in-one liquid cooling loop. There's a few really big-ass air coolers that can offer very similar cooling to an all-in-one setup, so I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the odd chip running at 5GHz on air...
Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat
Stumbled upon a Trinity laptop on ebuyer.
Seems quite costly for what it is, perhaps that is why they only stock 3 of them :D

Its the water cooler bundled with the FX8150 kit if you look at cooler. It resembles the Asetek Kuhler 920.

I remember a similar thing before Bulldozer launched when iBuypower(maybe?) were hawking around their own build with Bulldozer running at 4.8/5GHz so i'm not sure this is worth shouting about either.
Can't wait for launch, though. It seems ages since i spent my morning poring over some architecture details/review

Indeed, Here's a consumer-targeted Samsung with the same APU for ~ £400: http://www.ebuyer.com/391954-samsung...np355v5c-a05uk
And quad core (A8-4500) for £450: http://www.ebuyer.com/392598-samsung...np355v5c-a04uk
And for good measure, A8-4500 with 8GB RAM and 1TB hdd for £500: http://www.ebuyer.com/392599-samsung...np355v5c-a03uk (although for the same price you could opt for the 13" Samsung with ULV Trinity: http://www.ebuyer.com/391901-samsung...np535u3c-a01uk)
OK, one last one: top of Samsung's Trinity range (Samsung appear to be the only company really getting behind trinity), £600 gets you A10-4600M, 8GB/1TB and HD 7670M for dual graphics goodness :) http://www.ebuyer.com/391962-samsung...np355v5c-s01uk
Nice to see a few more options filtering through, even if it is all through 1 manufacturer... :)

Re: AMD - Piledriver chitchat
so the the Athlon II 740 will be for the FM2 boards .
Why can't they make them for the AM3+ ?
