What do you use your PC and are you going to get a graphics card? What is the entire budget for your PC?

    Re: amd or intel

Are you building a whole new PC here? Your choice of MOBO pretty much dictates which processor you're going to have to use have you thought about that (and how much money you're going to throw at that as well). I think you would get better responces if you said what your budget was for your entire build and listed what parts you needed.
Also what do you want to use the computer for? Desktop publishing? Internet? Games? Graphics work etc etc this very much dictates what kind of things you would need.

I honestly don't know much about AMD having not ventured into their tech since my FX53 processor many many years ago. However you can get some of the i3 Sandy Bridge CPUs for around the £100 mark but like I said if you could list total budget, uses and anything you're intending to salvage from your old computer it will help everyone here a lot.

    Re: amd or intel

What sort of work do you do?? Do you have a copy of Windows 7 64 bit??

If you get 20 post on Hexus you can free postage from Scan.

The following is a components list I produced earlier.

One of the following PSUs would do the job:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/450w-...v-fan-atx-v231

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-...s-12v-quiet-fa

This optical drive would be a good choice:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/sony-...sata-black-oem

The total will around £440 to £450.

That would run many games at reasonable settings at 1680X1050 and 1920X1080.

Amazon also sell the Phenom II X4 965BE for £76 which is slightly slower than a Core i3 for gaming but better for video encoding and multi-threaded applications.

Another alternative is the AM A8-3870K:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/AMD-A-Series...8720819&sr=8-2

The IGP on the A8 series is far better than any of the current Intel desktop CPUs and is suitable for light gaming. For multi-threaded applications it will be generally as good or slightly better than a Core i3,although the Core i3 is better optimised for gaming with an additional card.

However, the build should be under £400. Socket FM1,does have a no upgrade path for the CPU though.

    Re: amd or intel

I think that if you're looking at light enough gaming that the graphics card doesn't matter to you, then the CPU won't matter much either. As CAT-THE-FIFTH asked, what kind of work do you need it for? Is it work that needs processing power or not really?

    Re: amd or intel

As you're looking for a low-cost budget PC for light gaming, I would suggest an AMD based system, as they offer the cheapest options. Intel, as you say, is indeed 'better' but only when you start getting into the higher price ranges.

Though, that being said, there are some quite nice cheap intel i3 CPUs on the market, such as the one show in the above reply

    Re: amd or intel

Get the i3 as the guy above suggests, it is an excellent processor that fit's easily into your budget. You can play some very popular games on low settings with the iGPU and the CPU is a good match for a mid range graphics card if you want to buy one later on.

What about a pre-built from scan http://3xs.scan.co.uk/ShowSystem.asp?SystemID=1270 It comes with 4gb ram though not 8gb, you can always add more later as prices come down if you feel the system needs it.

    Re: amd or intel

Well you are saving a good £30 by building it yourself and you get total choice of components, many of which scan don't give you any options for.
It's so easy to build your own these days, especially on a low spec system like this one.

You should be fine with a budget Intel Celeron G540 for £31 from Novatech.

Fantastic suggestion for those on a budget.

These new 1155 Celeron are challenging perceptions of the brand.

G620 seems a better bet, some games like cache memory and the higher clock doesn't hurt.
A G620 in Cat's list earlier I think brings it into the £400 budget.

    Re: amd or intel

It all depends on what you intend to use either manufacture for

Intel seems for good overclocks and benchmarks

AMD seems good for budget driven systems and reliability

your choice really and depends on your budget...

You list reliability for AMD but not Intel, is there any reasoning behind this?

    sorry i missed that out

at the moment ivy bridge as far i am concerned is having problems but sandy bridge is fine and reliable

Ivy bridge has an overheating problem even though Intel state 100deg C on the chip it still has problems where there is poor ventilation in the case also you may have to think about a suitable watercooling setup to aid further potential overheating problems.. I think that Intel are going to adress this issue in the next batch of Retail 3770K cpus...

I have always looked towards Intel for reliability but until recently with the new range of Intel (*oc* ups) this has made me rethink.....

I went over to AMD as it was a budget decision way back in 2009 when Intel was reaping ££££ for a lot less performance CPUS...

    Explination over
