    Gaming CPU's ?

so whats your thoughts on CPU's for Gaming?
    INTEL or AMD

    Mainly for MMO's
Ive always used AMD in the past, but as my last rig died a couple of years ago ive been forced to use a lappy with dedicated GPU and now feel i need to build or buy a new rig.

What sort of budget are you looking at?? What games are you playing??

Most MMOs are designed to scale well even for lower end hardware to improve accessibility of the game.

They are both fine for gaming but Intel are the better CPU and probably will be from now on and have been for a long time.

Thats a bit of a blanket statement there

Intel is generally better at the high (expensive) PC end. For most people, AMD is better value plus less expensive motherboards and that allows more money to be put into a graphics card which will make for a better system overall.

I am still on my 3 year old 955BE AMD cpu, and not felt any need to update yet. Frankly all modern CPUs are pretty good (as long as you avoid Atom).

That's my 2p, now back to Diablo for me

    Re: Gaming CPU's ?

only time i used intel was the q6600 other than that it was amd .. because of the price..
when building my 1090t system i did price up a intel sys at same spec ..would have cost £100-125 more ..
but really do we need all the power of a top end chip ,my thoughts say no as most of the work is done by the gpu these days ..so price up both .. and see what card you can get

    Re: Gaming CPU's ?

I don't think either brand are better for gaming - it just comes down to budget and personal preference. My understanding is that in benchmarks the high-end Intel CPUs outperform AMD ones.

Well the Intel Core i5 2500k is the gamers choice, and they overclock really well.

    Re: Gaming CPU's ?

I have been building myself AMD systems for years, mainly due to cost and wanting to spend more on the GPU, however, Intel seems to be racing ahead with performance, and the price differential seems to have narrowed a little. I feel that I will go Intel for my next upgrade (next year because I can't resist the shiny shiny)

    Re: Gaming CPU's ?

The only time you'll need plenty of CPU power in a modern game is with RTS games - an example of which here with Shogun 2: Total War. For the most part though, virtually any new CPU over £90 will be fine.

    Re: Gaming CPU's ?

Even Intel Pentium CPUs are mostly faster than higher end AMD ones for gaming, but I agree with the posters who said it doesn't matter much. MMORPG's don't require a very high frame rate, and tend to work well with low end CPU's.

Unless you run it on a dual core processor p8700 Laptop with AMD HD 4650 despite all graphics options turned down.

True, but then an FX4100 is the same cost as one of the usable Pentium branded desktop CPUs and just as fast for gaming. If you aren't comparing at the same price point, it really doesn't work.

Quite the contrary. See for example this article from Tom's Hardware. The FX4100 is soundly beaten by the slightly cheaper Pentium 860 and most of the time even by the $40 cheaper Pentium G630.

Edit: I've been an AMD fan for years, and I'm still using a Phenom II X6 1090T and an E-350 laptop, but being an AMD fan doesn't mean you have to be blind to reality, and for gaming purposes there's just no competition. Regardless of what AMD CPU you're looking at, there's a cheaper Intel CPU with better gaming performance. There are applications in which the FX-4100 beats similarly priced Intel CPUs thanks to having more cores, but gaming isn't one of them.
