The 1045T seems awesome for a workstation or gaming PC. The FX6100 seems to be more fitting (and better VFM!) for virtualisation/server workloads though and has a higher default clockspeed and the turbo to almost 4GHz...

Do I really need a 12 core ESX cluster though? ...

The FX8120 is not too bad at £101 either,you could have 16 integer cores!!

The Phenom II X6 will be better for gaming though.

You can probably run it at 3GHZ just on stock voltage. The 95W Phenom II X6 1045T and 1055T CPUs are good CPUs.
