    Haswell processors - new socket!?

    Hey guys & gals

    I'm about to build a new Ivy Bridge i5 setup, but was looking at how "future proof" it might be. Ivy Bridge's successor is Haswell and is based on a 22nm manufacturing process and annoyingly a new socket (LGA 1150)

    I need a new PC relatively soon, so I'm thinking that waiting for Haswell isn't worth it. Will there be any new LGA 1155 processors or is Intel's current offering all that there will be? It kinda sucks to think that I won't be able to buy a better CPU in a couple of years and benefit from a performance bump.

    I am waiting for Haswell, but am still pretty happy with my existing CPU for the time being.

    I don't really think it is that big a deal, CPU performance is already pretty good and it makes less sense now to upgrade as frequently as every two years.
    What is your current processor, if it is really struggling then just upgrade. An IB processor will last you at least 3-4 years imo.

    If you buy say an i5 3570k I can't see you wanting for performance in two years time.

    The only new ones will be the odd speed bumps here and there. Any new architecture based CPU's will be on a different socket.

    I have a G0 stepping Core 2 Quad Q6600 (but can't overclock it because it's stuck inside a Dell). Actually, I was looking at getting that particular CPU! Awesome.

    Ok, I think I'll just get a current generation i5, probably the unlocked core i5 so that I can overclock

    looking at the news just over the last few weeks it would seem that the Haswell cpu will only offer a 10% increase in performance but the MB chipset is looking better.

    Do you want a motherboard? Got a spare ASUS s775 board. Currently has a Pentium D sat in it. Got it for testing HTPC CPU coolers as the CPU runs HOT but married now so not really got time anymore. Thinking about it, if it's in a Dell you'd prob need a new case too. Then a better PSU to overclock without having to worry about stability of the power source.... yeah sit tight for haswell

    I think they're gunning for low power draw - everything is targetting mobile devices and ultrabooks right now. Without a serious challenge to the top-end CPUs Intel will keep their focus on mobile and low-power + integrated graphics performance.

    Ha, thanks for the offer. I was looking at buying a LGA 755 mobo before to save some money and get a performance bump. However, the dell case is tiny, the power supply is ~300W and I need more ram. Upgrading my old system is no longer cost effective Serves me right for buying an off the shelf PC in the first place

    Well talking of Dell's the old dimension 5000 is still running, recently upgrade RAM and installed Windows 7 Although the P4 isn't great, however gotta give due respects. Also the 19" monitor that came with it is still working!

    who me? nah i told him to wait. And you have my sympathy if ur still using a p4. i still own 2 machines with p4s. they are gathering dust as it's too painful to run them once you've moved onto faster chips.

    No lol it was a joke aimed at the OP. Regarding the Dell I remember I used to play CoD4 on it @ 640x480 Although don't get too sympathetic as it's not my main rig! That you can find in my system specs

    Ok, I think I'll just get a current generation i5, probably the unlocked core i5 so that I can overclock

    as he's already pointed out his case is small so would limit his choice, his psu is 300w dell oem so prob not a good idea to clock on it and he'd reather not throw money on an old system when he can put it to his new machine. sadly unless he sells it that 'badboy' won't get put through its paces .

    thinking about it, would flashing the bios allow the op to overclock?

    Jump ship before it sinks. I myself was trying to hold on to my old set-up which was similar i.e q8400s. Spending over £60 on DDR2 memory, and all you get for that is 800mhz & 4gb. even had mine oc'd @ 3.2ghz and booting from SSD so I thought it was quick and it was to be honest. But then got a 2500k with a z68 board. and the difference is night vs day. If you run an ssd you can take advantage of sata3. when booting on the q8400s my apps loading was this 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10. now its 1 done!!!!. my cinibench scores for the q8400s @ 3.2ghz was open gl 35.53 and cpu 2.29. compare this to my 2500k @ 4.2ghz open gl 88.20 and cpu 7.07.

    You won't notice much/anything from Ivy to Haswell. I had a Q6600 which had to be upgraded because the system was really old. That was the only reason.

    If you wait you will always see a performance bump, that is technology for you.
