    Asus p5q deluxe.

Hi to all, I have just bought the above board and would like to know which is the best cpu to use with it as I have 2.

    Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 - 3.16 GHz / 6M / 1333 / 06 (SLAPK) This is the rare type which I believe is highly overclockable.

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 2.40GHz processor.

I am a novice and do not know how to overclock yet.
The pc is mostly used for photography, film, video etc, I would just like a nice quick pc when I have multiple pages open etc.

    Hopefully 4gb OZC Reaper x

    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

No question about it, use the Q6600 and dont bother with the E8500.

    1. The Q6600 is also highly overclockable.

    2. For the type of work you want to use the PC for I'd gues that a quad core cpu is going to be much more valuable to you. i.e. I would have thought that much of the software you'll be using is multithreaded aware/enabled and thus 4 cores is better/faster than 2.

    Re: Asus p5q deluxe.

If your q66 is the second revision version, ie G0 stepping (SLACR) then it will also OC well. I managed a stable 3.0Ghz on air. I could push to 3.2 however it would BSOD or crash Prime95 sometimes. This was probably due to not enough voltage and I couldn't put any more volts through it due to heat. Realtemp reported mid 70s C which I think its a bit high for said chip.

In any case the q66 would be the better chip overall the only time I can see it losing out to the E85 is on single threaded apps.

Hi Caveman, Thanks for your help. I have just checked the cpu and it has printed on the top SLACR . The board is 3yrs old and lightly used and not for gaming and never overclocked.
    Many thanks for your help.
    Regards Rob.

The duel core should get to 4.2ghz, the quad 3.2ghz. But for the work you do, the extra cores should get used so will probably be better.

However the clocked quad will use more power, so make more heat and mean you'll need a better, possibly louder fan, so thats something to consider if you want to keep it quiet.

Both the Q6600 and your motherboard were highly popular for OC'ing, and there's been a lot of info and some very useful threads on them. I'd suggest a good rummage with the search tool in our older threads will pay dividends.

    Re: Asus p5q deluxe.

I made some months ago an OC for my friend computer with a p35 mobo and Q6600. We arrived to 3,2GHz without problem, but you can arrive almost always at 3.0GHz without troubles and with minimum Vcore changes

    It's a good configuration
