    Pentium G860

    Hi

Has anyone used a Pentium G860 because I want to build a computer that's responsive and maybe play a few basic games, unlike the old Pentium 4 computer which I've been using for the last 6 years

Once I save up enough I'll get something like an i5

    Thanks

    Re: Pentium G860

What are the main uses of your system??

Unless you get a discrete card, the IGP on the G860 is not that great. If you want to play a few games on a budget, one of the AMD Llano or Trinity CPUs probably would make more sense.

Here is my review of the A6-3670K when compared to a Core i3 2100:

    http://forums.hexus.net/hexus-reader...ew-thread.html

    That is a £60 CPU.

Any modern CPU will be a huge upgrade over a Pentium 4. I would say any current £30 AMD or Intel CPU will probably be far better.

What is your total budget for your system and does it include an OS??

    Re: Pentium G860

I'm just going to do some basic web browsing and mostly use it for college work but I want it to be really upgradable so in the future I can just add better components right now I just want a computer that'll run smoothly

I've already got the motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-M
    and the RAM: Kingston HyperX (2 x 4GB) 1600

My budget was orginally around £250

    Thanks

The problem is though, that socket 1155 is basically being replaced by socket 1150 in 4 to 5 months time.

For your purposes even a £30 CPU will be massively better. In fact you might have been better served by seeing if you current motherboard in the P4 based computer could take a Core2 duo. I went from a Pentium 4 dual core to an E4000 dual core and even at that time it was a big upgrade. Faster E6000 series CPUs can be picked up for around £10 to £20 secondhand now.

    Even then,you could have got a Core i3 and a B75 motherboard for around the same price,as a G860 and a Z77 based one.

    Re: Pentium G860

I was worried that the new Haswell chips were coming out but I can still use anything from sandy bridge or ivy bridge and there performance will be able to handle anything that comes out for the next few years.

That's why I got a Z77 motherboard because it has all the features I need for future upgrades such as graphics cards.

Unless you really want to overclock, the B75 will have all the features you want. The problem is that unless you go secondhand,or upgrade within nine months ,I don't expect the retail prices of IB based CPUs to drop at all even relative to Haswell.

I don't even overclock now,but I expect my system will last for years anyway and I do push it. Modern CPUs are quick.

You have an ancient CPU,especially if it is a single core Pentium 4,so imagine a Core i3 and a B75?? Even then, the IGP on the G860 is meh. I had a Core i3 2100 and the IGP is really average for gaming.

Since you already bought the motherboard,I would get a G530,and make sure you get a reasonably good PSU if using a very old one.

The thing is though,I would have still looked at whether upgrading your current system, would have worked out. You could have extended your current system until Haswell, and probably spent more on it.

    Edit!!

Another thing I noticed. Using an SSD makes a system far more responsive. I have used a system with a quicker CPU but a normal HDD and it felt slower in reality than one with a slower CPU and a SSD.

    Re: Pentium G860

I did look into upgrading my old dell dimension 3000 but it turned out I would have been more expensive than buying a new computer.

I'm going to get a Corsair CX 600 again for upgradbility but its also meant to be reliable as well

I was thinking of getting a 60GB SSD for the OS there around £30 now and a hard drive for files

    Thanks

Looks like it is socket 478. TBH,even a G530 would be massively faster. What is your graphics card budget??

You talked about Fallout:New Vegas, what other games are you playing?? Fallout:NV ran fine on my old Q6600 and and HD4830 fine.

    What case are you using??

    I would get this PSU:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-...12v-fan-atx-v2

It is made by a company called Seasonic, who also make the highend Corsair ones.

    Re: Pentium G860

I haven't really thought about how much I want to spend on a graphics card but I have been looking at a 7850

    I've bought a Corsair 200r case

That PSU does look good and it's cheaper than the Corsair one

    Thanks

    Re: Pentium G860

I would probably try to save up an get a Core i3 at least,if you are going with a graphics card over £100.

You can get a socket 1155 Core i3 off Ebay secondhand for less than £60.

Instead of the G860, you can also go for the G840 @ £30 if it's in stock near you:
