    i7-3770K Cooling and Usual temperatures

I have just finished building my new pc, with the following specs:
    i7-3770K
    ASUS Sabertooth Z77
    OCZ ZS 650W
    Crucial M4 128GB SSD
    Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHZ
GeForce 9500GT (Planning on getting a Radeon HD 7950)
Cooler Master Elite 431 Plus Case
    LG Blu-Ray Burner
    Some old hard drive

I'm using the stock Intel cooler, and there is one fan on the front of the case. I haven't bothered with any extra cooling for now, since I wasn't planning on any gaming or overclocking until I get the Graphics Card, and even then I wasn't planning to permanently overclock, just play around with it.

I started handbrake converting a 1280x720 500MB 20min MKV to a 1280x720 "High Profile" MP4. Within about 5 minutes, the ASUS AI suite for the Sabertooth motherboard popped up a warning saying the CPU had reached 70C. I stopped the conversion , and opened up the "Thermal Radar", which said the CPU had dropped to 63C, and falling.
Idle, the CPU is about 36C , with the hottest part being USB 3 at 45C and the coolest being the motherboard at 28C.

There were two mini fans that came with the motherboard called accessory fans. I had installed them, but were noisy so I unplugged them.

Am I doing anything wrong? Presumably I need a better CPU cooler and some more case fans, but should I?

    Thank you!

Re: i7-3770K Cooling and Usual temperatures

If you are planning to do more CPU heavy work, I would say yes, new cooler and additional fans. When you program popped that your CPU reached 70 and after you stopped the conversion the temperature started to drop was because your CPU wasn't really doing anything anymore.

The TWO additional fans to the MoBo will do nothing with the CPU cooling, if they are noisy just leave them like that, your MoBo temperatures are good. If you plan overclocking in the future, I would suggest you to buy something good. A ONE-SLOT or TWO-SLOT all-in-one water cooler would certainly do the job. I recently purchased a Thermaltake CLW0215 and I can say I am very impressed. At 1000 RPM (both fans) the cooler can keep a i5-3570K idle at 26 degrees (same as the MoBo) and can hold it for 2-2.5h in prime95 under 60 degrees (above that the MoBo settings turn the fans to full blast).

And some case fans would not kill you either. And unless you are 100% sure that your MoBo can handle 3pin fans correctly, buy 4pin fans, or later you will regret it (stuck with fans at 100% is not always good).

You should definitely get a front case fan. It won't matter how good the cpu cooler is if no air is getting into the case.
70c is a little bit high but not fatal if it was hitting 80c+ I'd be very worried

Re: i7-3770K Cooling and Usual temperatures

Thanks for your replies. I already have a front panel fan, which came with the Elite 431 Plus Case.

I've ordered one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
And I know it's probably not the best, but if it doesn't turn out great, it's not the end of the world, since I will be buying one or two more for the bottom, rear or two top slots anyway, depending on where I put this one. (Any recommendations?)

There seem to be a lot of Arctic Cooling CPU coolers around... which one's the best?
I've been looking at the 13, 13 Pro, Freezer Xtreme, and i30. What's the difference between them all?
Also the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO.

If you don't feel like answering all my questions, and you had upto £40 to spend on a CPU cooler, and £25 to spend on two more fans, what would you go for?

    Thank you!

Re: i7-3770K Cooling and Usual temperatures

I have the CM Hyper 212 Evo so can definitely vouch for it However the Hyper 612S wouldn't be a bad option either http://www.scan.co.uk/products/coole...oogle+shopping

You should be eligible for free delivery once you reach 20 posts More info here:

As for fans not the wisest of decisions going with that one but I would recommend any of the following

    Xigmatek XOF F1251
    Enermax UB Silence
Akasa Apache FN058(Available at Scan too)

    Thanks for the recommendations.
Before I go ahead and order the CM Hyper 212 Evo and any 2 of the suggested fans, would I be missing out on anything with any of the Arctic Coolers?

I can vouch for the arctic pro 13, Great quiet cooler. As I write my cpu is @ around 95% work load converting a video @4.2ghz and my highest temp is 53 deg with a room temp of 24 deg.

Re: i7-3770K Cooling and Usual temperatures

Thanks for all the replies. I went for the Arctic Cooling i30 in the end, and it's worked great. My CPU idles between 26-30 and when running handbrake hits 40-50 at most.
    It's very big though.
