    Poor Corsair H100 Temps

TL;DR - Fitted an H100 today and the temps are no better than my old air cooler. Ideas?

I have an i7 3770k, running at 4.8 GHz at 1.28v, with a Coolermaster Hyper 212. Now the weathers warming up, it's starting to get hot (83° C under load) and I bought a Corsair H100 on eBay to see if that would help.

I fitted it this morning, but I noticed the waterblock's face was all scratched so I lapped it at the same time, and did the CPU as well. Didn't get a mirror finish (only got to 1000 grit) but it did help (H100 was convex, CPU was ok).

However, been running it on the max setting, and under load it's hitting 81° C - basically the same as before!

    Any ideas?

    My thoughts were:
Poor TIM application - the AS5 I used was old, maybe I need to buy some new thermal paste and try again (recommendations on the best stuff to use?)
Poor lapping - I've bought some 2500 grit to take it a bit further (I've never lapped anything before to feel free to redicule!)
Poor mounting - I screwed the H100 down all the way but it appeared to run out of the thread on the screws before it went too tight

    Some pictures.

    CPU:

Waterblock (it did get a little better than this)

    Re: Poor Corsair H100 Temps

    Interesting the least to say.
Lets assume the cooler works correctly (air in a second hand purchased unit is a everpresent danger I think) then I would say that the cooler block is not sitting correctly on the CPU (wouldn't worry that much about the paste, in emergency and short term even toothpaste or lipstick will do).
Is the radiator warm or hot to touch when the CPU is at the top temperature?-If yes that would mean that it sits correctly but there is just too much heat to exchange.
If the radiator is cold(or warmish barely) and the temp difference is minimal between the air inside the case and air blown from the radiator, then you need to revise your CPU and cooler connection.

have you got the pump plugged into the motherboard fan header? if so make sure that any form of fan control is turned off.
press the button on the block to get that into it's full setting.

on your lapping, looks like you've got a few deep scratches there, you ether pressed too hard or didn't work long enough at the rougher grit before going down to the finer grit papers

I've got everything plugged in, but got fan control etc turned on.

    I'll try disabling it...

hope you lapped those on a piece of glass .. after the 2500 use brasso but just on the cooler ..
and i would'nt say those units are that good for an o/c system ..

I don't think Xigmatek fans are suited for water cooling systems. Try some Silverstone Air Penetrator fans or Corsair AF series fans and maybe the temperatures will drop by a few degrees.

I've purchased some Zalman fans with a much higher static pressure just in case (although the fluctuations in temperature aren't due to the fans imo - but it can't hurt to try)

    On the CPU...?

It's been pointed out on another forum the backplate might be incorrectly orientated (d'oh) so I'll lap the CPU more, upgrade the fans, replace the thermal paste & fix the backplate and hope that fixes it.

    Re: Poor Corsair H100 Temps

It's hard to tell from the pics, but the CPU looks like it could be in a worse state than when it left the factory (in regards to lapping).

The theory behind lapping is an easy one: You want the two surfaces to be as 'perfect' as they can be in regards to their flatness.

Ideally it should look like this:

Still, it's way too high for a H100 assuming the paste is okay, so I wouldn't say it's the root cause.

From what ive seen, theres no paste on the CPU or H100. The H100 comes with pre applied thermal paste doesnt it?

It would when new - but mine was second hand. Thus I had to apply thermal paste myself

    Update:

Did some more lapping and cleaned the surfaces up a bit more.

Rotated the backplate so that the cutout in the backplated lined up with the screws on the back of the CPU socket (as pointed out on OCN, and as NOT pointed out in the instructions!)

Used different thermal paste (Arctic Cooling MX-4)

Added some extra fans (Push-Pull on the rad using some Zalman and Xigmatek fans, both have good static pressures although both are running on the lowest settings)

Modified the mounting - the backplate comes "through" the motherboard however it's so thick that even with the standoffs screwed all the way it won't hold fixed. A few washers on the backplate sorted this out and held it nice and steady.

After all this work, I'm now getting load temps of ~65° C on the lowest setting which is a lot better! Still not amazing, though...

65 under load on lowest settings at 4.8 Ghz @ 1.28V is pretty good.

Buy some higher grade Thermal paste, that fixed a similar problem I had with the H60
