    Re: cpu upgrade

Athlon X3 450 might be better. You lose one core, but you go from 2.2 to 3.2 GHz on a newer core so on most lightly threaded workloads you win, on heavily threaded workloads there probably isn't much in it. They are about £50 from ebuyer or Novatech. Check motherboard compatibility first though.

These old Athlon/Phenom chips are disappearing quite fast though, the X6 seem to be sky high prices if you can find them and X4 are about gone.

    Re: cpu upgrade

Again I would have to say check the motherboard before trying that. If the motherboard is only 95W rated (and lots are) then no you can't.

Those CPUs were never stellar overclockers and did tend to get very hot.

One of the kids machines at home is a 7750BE cpu, a dual core version at 2.7GHz. I run it at 2.8 because beyond that it just isn't worth the heat.

    Re: cpu upgrade

if your motherboard supports a AM3 or AM3+ why no invest £15 more in a AM3 processor? Like a fx4100 - they can be found on eBay for £65 or so.

ISTR the 9500 was DDR2 only, in which case it isn't on an AM3+ motherboard
